Waldeck is a town in the northern Hessian district of Waldeck-Frankenberg with 10 districts. The eponymous core city is a recognized climatic health resort.
Waldeck is known nationwide for its location on the Edersee in the middle of the Waldecker Bergland or in the outer catchment area of the Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park , which includes the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park , for the Waldeck Castle , the landmark of the town of Waldeck and the Waldeck-Frankenberg district, and through the “Scheid” peninsula near Nieder-Werbe .
geography
Geographical location
The urban area of Waldeck extends in northern Hesse about 30 km west-southwest of Kassel north of the Edersee through which the Eder flows , the second largest reservoir in Germany in terms of area and third largest in volume . It extends in low mountain ranges mainly used for agriculture and forestry.
The urban area is located in the northern part of the Kellerwald-Edersee nature park in the middle of the Waldecker Bergland and stretches from the banks of the Edersee in a northerly direction into the Long Forest . To the south of the reservoir lies the Kellerwald-Edersee National Park, located within the Kellerwald-Edersee Nature Park , which is part of the Kellerwald .
Sections of several rivers run through the Waldecker urban area or along its borders, including the Eder in the Fulda catchment area, its tributaries Netze and Werbe and in the Diemel catchment area the Twiste tributaries Watter and Wilde .
Neighboring communities
Waldeck borders in the north on the municipality of Twistor Valley , in the northeast on the city of Bad Arolsen (both in the district of Waldeck-Frankenberg), in the east on the cities of Wolfhagen and Naumburg (both in the district of Kassel ), in the south on the municipality of Edertal and in the west the municipality of Vöhl and the city of Korbach (all three in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district).
City structure
The town of Waldeck consists of ten districts : Alraft , Dehringhausen , Freienhagen , Höringhausen , Netze , Nieder-Werbe , Ober-Werbe , Selbach , Sachsenhausen and the core town of Waldeck .
history
As part of the regional reform in Hesse , the formerly independent communities of Alraft, Höringhausen, Netze and Nieder-Werbe and the two cities of Sachsenhausen and Waldeck merged to form the new city of Waldeck on October 1, 1971 .
The historically significant name "Waldeck" was chosen as the name for the newly created town, which initially referred to the castle in what is now the core of the city and after which the counts there named themselves from 1180 onwards. The county of Waldeck, the later Principality of Waldeck-Pyrmont, the former Free State of Waldeck (from 1918) and the later district of Waldeck (from 1942), today the district of Waldeck-Frankenberg, also had this name.
On January 1, 1974, the municipalities of Dehringhausen and Ober-Werbe (with the former municipality of Oberwerba incorporated on December 31, 1970) and the former city of Freienhagen were incorporated into Waldeck by state law . With this the city of Waldeck reached its present size. Local districts were established for all 10 of today's city districts .

Coat of arms, flag and official seal
The city of Waldeck has a coat of arms, a flag and an official seal.
- Description of coat of arms
- "In gold, a six-pointed black star with a white lily on top."
Taking into account the special historical circumstances of the newly founded city, the Waldeck coat of arms was chosen as the basis. The six-pointed star and the lily represent the formerly independent municipalities and cities that merged to form the city of Waldeck in 1971.
- Flag description
- "The flag of the city of Waldeck shows the city's coat of arms on two equally wide strips of black and gold in the upper half."
The flag was approved on May 13, 1976 by the Hessian Minister of the Interior.
