City Church

The Waldeck town church is located in Waldeck in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district , northern Hesse .

history

On May 13, 1236, Bishop Wilhelm von Havelberg consecrated a chapel in Waldeck to St. Mary and subordinated it to the Cistercian convent of Marienthal in Netze, which was founded in 1228 . It is not clear whether this chapel was on the site of the current church.

The choir is the oldest part of today's church, construction of which began around 1300. While stately new churches (Kilian's Church (1335) and Nicolai Church (1359) in Korbach, Bad Wildungen town church) were built throughout the county, the town church in Waldeck only received an extension, a north aisle and a new south wall. The choir got a new tracery window on the south side . The citizens and the Counts of Waldeck had only a very limited influence on this branch church of the Netze monastery.

In 1483 she received a carved altar with painted wings, a Marian altar, which represents the coronation of Mary by the Trinity. The image of the predella, the decorated base of the altar structure, shows Christ with the twelve apostles. The altar was donated by the abbess of the Augustinian monastery of Berich , Margarete Huhn; she is shown in the lower corner of the left wing as a donor figure with her coat of arms.

From the original single-nave church building, only the choir and western wall have been preserved. The ship in its current form was expanded in the 16th century. As with the fortified churches in Bergheim and Affoldern , the tower was built on the northeast side of the choir. Presumably it used to have four small corner towers. Two of the four bells date from the 14th century.

Reformation in the county of Waldeck

In 1521 Count Philip IV of Waldeck-Wildungen became a supporter of the Reformation doctrine at the Diet of Worms . Philipp invited the Lutheran preacher Johann Hefentreger, who had been expelled from Fritzlar in Mainz, to a trial sermon, which he gave on April 29, 1526 in the castle chapel of Friedrichstein Castle in Alt-Wildungen. Philip IV and his uncle, Count Philip III. von Waldeck-Eisenberg, Hefentreger then appointed the pastor of the city of Waldeck, their residence. Hefträger preached on June 17, 1526 for the first time according to Luther's teachings in Waldeck. He became the reformer of the county of Waldeck. Today two memorial plaques at the entrances of the town church commemorate this day.
