Quality classification

In a report by the NRW State Environment Agency in 2001, the Twiste was classified in water quality class II-III. Various stretches show some structural damage, this is due to the fact that the river is dammed several times and large amounts of water are diverted. The linear patency for aquatic organisms is not given due to the reservoirs, as required by the EU Water Framework Directive.
