The Welda hydropower plant is a run-of-river power plant with a Kaplan turbine on the Twiste , a tributary of the Diemel .
The power plant, which opened in 1910, is located in the eastern outskirts of Welda , a district of Warburg , in the Höxter district . The power plant was built by the electrical engineer Hugo Schuchard, jun. (* February 28, 1879 in Barmen , † October 3, 1969 in Warburg). With the exception of the winter months in which he was in Barmen, he grew up on the Calenberg Castle , which is adjacent to Welda and belongs to his father, and lived on the Neu Calenberg estate in Calenberg after the First World War .
For the construction of the power plant, the engineer had acquired a former mill, the Twistemühle, for the purpose of conversion. He had two turbines and two generators installed. The villages of Welda, Calenberg and Wettesingen were initially supplied with electrical energy . A nail factory was later built on the site and from the 1920s the electricity generated was also used for a threshing box (wage threshing).
After Hugo Schuchard's death, the hydropower plant was sold in 1973 and changed hands again in 2009. The power plant is now operated by a private company, and the electricity is fed into the regional supply network. The electrical output of the power plant is around 55 kW . The current operator has been Mr. Ulrich Schütt since 2018.
Power plant on the Hörler Bach
In the village of Welda itself, a second, smaller hydroelectric power plant with an output of around three kilowatts has been operated for a few years to generate electricity by the municipality on Hörler Bach at the old mill.
