geography

Katharinenberg lies at an altitude of 438 m; the area is 158 hectares. The place is in the nature park Eichsfeld-Hainich-Werratal on the edge of the Eichsfeld .

history

The place was mentioned in 1512 as the property of the Harstall family, who owned a fortified manor here. In the Middle Ages the place had a customs post on an army road.

In 1462 a pilgrimage chapel of the Anrode monastery was built in Katharinenberg , which was rebuilt between 1520 and 1525 by the Anrode monastery and the Großburschla monastery to the pilgrimage church that is now in ruins (see Katharinenberg church ruins ), but not completed. Around 1600 the Harstall manor was built south of the church and built on the remains of older buildings.

Due to the proximity to the border between the GDR and the Federal Republic of Germany , Katharinenberg was in a restricted area until the reunification . On January 1, 1957, the old parish Katharinenberg was dissolved and incorporated into the parish of Diedorf . In 1984 the village green, the center of the village, was restored.

On April 21, 1995, the new Katharinenberg community was formed from the member communities of the administrative community Diedorf , Wendehausen , Diedorf, Faulungen and Schierschwende.

With the dissolution of the municipality of Katharinenberg, the place with the former districts of Diedorf , Wendehausen , Faulungen and Schierschwende came to the rural municipality of Südeichsfeld on December 1, 2011 . The last mayor of the Katharinenberg community was Lothar Göbel (CDU).
