The Twistesee is a reservoir on the Twiste . It is located near Wetterburg in the north Hessian district of Waldeck-Frankenberg ( Germany ).

The reason for the construction of the dam was the Heinrich flood of 16./17. July 1965, which led to serious damage and destruction in the Twiste and Diemel catchment area . A dam was built for water regulation, which damms the twist to the reservoir with a flood protection area .

Geographical location

The Twistesee is located at the northern end of the Long Forest between the core town of Bad Arolsen located 3.3 km to the west , the core town of Volkmarsen located 5 km to the northeast and the town of Wolfhagen located 9.5 km to the southeast . The influence of the Twiste in the reservoir is located 1.3 km north-northeast of Braunsen , and the dam is located at the only riverside village of Wetterburg ; both are Bad Arolsener districts. The reservoir extends completely in the urban area of Bad Arolsen; The Neu-Berich district is located 1.3 km east of the dam .

dam

dam

The Twist dam near Wetterburg was built from 1971 (start of preparatory work in autumn) to 1981 (end of the trial damming ), as can be seen from the inscription on a metal plate that was mounted on a boulder at the eastern end of the dam . On 14 May 1973, the Hessian Minister of Agriculture-actuated Werner Best the first  sod for the dam construction. The trial construction began in 1977 and the actual work, which cost a total of almost 38 million DM , ended in the winter of 1978/1979. However, the dammed water was completely drained in the winter of 1980/1981 in order to carry out further bank reinforcements and to repair small leaks. In the spring of 1981 the damming took place again, which ended the trial jam. The inauguration of the dam took place on September 26, 1981 in the presence of the Hessian Prime Minister Holger Börner .

The dam is a red sandstone rubble dam, 275 m long at its crown and 21.5 m high above the valley floor, with a core seal made of red clay and has a total structure volume of 430,000 m³. Its water side is fortified with hard stones. The reservoir floor was sealed with fillings. A small hydropower plant (with 70 kW output) integrated into the dam  generates electricity . On the water side in front of the dam there is a flood relief tower with a 20 m high overflow funnel made of reinforced concrete, from which a 96 m long channel leads to the air side of the dam so that overflowing water flows into the Twiste; The Café im See restaurant is located on this tower .

Reservoir

The Twistesee has 76 hectares (0.76 km²) of water surface with normal full damming  and then contains 9.1 million m³ of water. Its permanent congestion in summer is 4.7 million m³. The reservoir, the target of which is 209.5  m above sea level. NHN is about 2.75 km long and a maximum of 0.3 km wide.

The Lefringhausen estate (also called Lefringshausen ), which stood on the west side of today's dam of the B 450, and the Campagnemühle fell victim to the reservoir . It is one of the cleanest in Germany because all wastewater from the area above the still water is collected and channeled past it.

Reservoir and protected areas

The Twistesee has - upstream of the south - a blocking system that is in front of the mouth of Twiste in the reservoir and carried along by the Twiste debris, flotsam and debris and the like kept away from the main reservoir. Their approximately 14 ha large and estimated 500 m long basin was dammed for the first time in 1974. The forecourt is separated from the main basin by the approximately 10 m high embankment of the federal highway 450 , which leads there through the very narrow Twisteal. Under a road bridge in this dam, the twist water flows from the fore basin over a small concrete weir into the main basin.

The pre-basin is designated as a 28 hectare reserve - Twist Reservoir (NSG no. 82824; founded in 1976) and as a 25 hectare bird reserve Vorsperre - Twist Reservoir (VSG no. 4620-401); therefore the same pre-dam is kept in it in summer and winter.

Touristic

The Twistesee is a popular local recreation area due to its many leisure activities . A 7 km long pedestrian and cycle path leads around its main part, some of which are asphalted or graveled; numerous paths invite you to go hiking and jogging in the woods . A water ski facility installed in the reservoir is available for water skiers . The still water can be used with inflatable boats, paddle boats and pedal boats. Sandy beaches were created on the shore. There is a nine-hole golf course and a miniature golf course on the mountain slopes to the west of the reservoir . There is also the holiday park Twistesee (also called Feriendorf Wiggenberg ), in which, for example, roof-top houses can also be rented for seminars . On the east bank there is a large lawn for sunbathing, a nudist meadow and a cordoned-off area for model ships .
