The sample storage is the first trial filling of a reservoir or a water reservoir after its construction or after a major remedial measure. The stability and usability (functionality) of the barrier structure , the subsoil and all operating facilities under load are verified. Normally, the test jam goes in several stages up to partial or full jams, possibly with intermittent subsidence. It can last for several years. At the end of the trial congestion which is decrease of the building.

When the trial jam begins, a trial jam commission is often formed from all those involved.

All parts of the system are always checked when the tank is empty before the damming begins. In the case of large dams, the trial damming and use of the dam usually begins before the barrier structure is completely finished. During the trial construction, the behavior of the structure is checked particularly intensively with the various measuring devices.

The trial jam is completed when the functionality of the operating equipment and the safety of all system components have been proven. The result is documented in a final report. The final report also contains specifications for future operation, as well as the inventory documents for the structure and the operating facilities, for the measurement and control facilities, the water management plan and the reservoir content and reservoir surface line.
