The Serengeti-Park Resort in Hodenhagen in Lower Saxony is an animal and leisure park . The park has a size of 220 hectares, 1500 animals, over 40 rides and shows as well as a resort with various overnight accommodations. As a zoo, it is a member of the VdZ and EAZA associations . In 2009 the park received certification as an extracurricular learning location in the field of "Education for Sustainable Development" from the Lower Saxony Ministry of Culture.

history

In 1972 the entrepreneur Charlie Stein had the idea of keeping exotic animals in the northern hemisphere . From this idea zoos in Montreal (today; La Ronde since 1967), New Jersey (today; Six Flags Great Adventure since 1974), Birmingham (today; Cannon Hill Park since 1973), Yokohama , Beekse Bergen and Hodenhagen emerged. Paolo Sepe acted as head of the zoological facilities, which ran under the name "Wild Animal Kingdom", a subsidiary of Stein Holding. The concept of parks was fundamentally different from ordinary zoos. Safaris with an animal run were offered. In addition, the parks should be able to support themselves without subsidies. The leisure program was rounded off by a few carousels. When the plant opened in 1974, investments totaled around 20 million Deutschmarks.

In 1982 - after the bankruptcy of the American operating company - the then Serengeti Park manager Paolo Sepe took over the Hodenhagener Park as owner. The park has been continuously renovated since 1983, which has resulted in the jungle safari with over 200 monkeys and the adventure safari in addition to the wildlife (called the Serengeti safari).

In 1996, the Serengeti Park managed to release a white rhinoceros bred in Europe into the world, the only one in the world. In 1997 Paolo Sepe's children Fabrizio Sepe and Veronica Trussardi-Sepe took over the Serengeti Park and ran the business together with their cousin Giovanni Sepe. On April 1, 2017, Fabrizio Sepe became the sole owner of the park through the takeover of his sister's company shares and has since been managing Serengeti-Park Hodenhagen GmbH as managing director together with Giovanni Sepe. In 2001 the first jungle safari tour started.

In 2004, the Serengeti-Park received the unlimited approval as a zoological garden according to the current EU Directive 99/22 / EC according to § 45 of the Lower Saxony State Nature Conservation Act and on the basis of the LANA report. In 2006 Boubou , the first African baby elephant in northern Germany in 30 years, was born. In 2007 the safari lodges were opened. In 2009, the Serengeti Park was certified by the Lower Saxony Ministry of Culture as an extracurricular learning location in the field of "Education for Sustainable Development". In 2010 the Aqua Safari , a ride with original Florida airboats, was inaugurated. In 2011, Charly , the oldest white rhinoceros in the world at the age of 53, died in 2011 and was kept in human care under controlled conditions.

In 2014 Serengeti Park celebrated its 40th anniversary and the resort was expanded to include 40 Masai Mara lodges. The African-style huts are built around their own animal enclosure, where giraffes and antelopes live, among others. The Black Mamba jet boat attraction was inaugurated in 2015. In 2016 new lodges were built and the quad safari opened. The Serengeti-Interactives started in 2017. In addition, the indoor safari was opened for bad weather days. In 2018, the Jurassic Safari was built and the speedboat attraction (Splash Safari) opened. In 2019 meerkats and kangaroos moved to the park and the Ice Age safari opened.

Areas

The Serengeti Park is divided into three areas: The Serengeti Safari (formerly Wildlife), the Jungle Safari (formerly Monkey World) and the Adventure Safari (formerly Leisure World).

The 120 hectare Serengeti Safari with around 1500 wild animals can be driven with your own vehicle. Alternatively, visitors can take part in a Serengeti bus tour, during which various animals are lured close to the bus by feeding. The area is divided into 16 areas:

Jungle Safari

Ring-tailed lemur with mother

In the jungle safari, 20 different species of monkeys (for example barbary macaques, squirrel monkeys, white-headed lemurs, ring-tailed lemurs, white-shouldered capuchins, white-hand gibbons, taffeta monkeys, chimpanzees) live in enclosures that are partly accessible. Within some of these enclosures there are no barricades between visitors and animals (for example the one with the Barbary apes), which is why the park management advises against entering them with bags, rucksacks, umbrellas and unsecured valuables.

The jungle safari tour starts in the monkey world and leads in open all-terrain vehicles through part of the animal world and over an off-road route with special effects.

Confiscated for the end of March 2013 from the German customs at Munich Airport White-headed Capuchin monkey from Justin Bieber was in May 2013 by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation decided an accommodation in the Serengeti Park.

Adventure safari

In the adventure safari (formerly the leisure world and water world) there are many different rides for children and adults, such as the family roller coaster, a ferris wheel and a small train. A "jungle safari tour" in open 4x4 vehicles with a driver leads through a fun area with artificial animals and various special effects. The Serengeti restaurant "Manyara" opened in 2019.

The adventure safari can be explored on foot. In the former water world you will find various attractions such as a 600 m long wild water slide, the Kumba Twister, a giant ship swing or the Condor from the Huss company. An aqua safari with Florida airboats, a ride on jet boats and a quad safari are also offered. In 2018 the Jurassic Safari and the Splash Safari opened. In 2019 the Ice Age Safari and the Safari Blitz were added.
