Airboat

Small airboat

An airboat is a propeller-driven watercraft used to slide around in inland waterways , especially marshes and shallow waters.

The airboat is primarily a watercraft, but up to a certain degree it can also be used on land (if there is some water on the surface, snow, ice), so it is an amphibious vehicle in the broader sense . Due to their construction, swamp boats are classed as flat boats .

Propulsion is carried out by one or more oversized air propellers mounted at the rear, which are driven by an internal combustion engine. The steering takes place by means of rudders (air flow deflection ), which act directly behind the propellers. The helmsman's seat is typically high up so that you can see over the vegetation (reeds). The design ranges from small one-person boats to large 18-seater boats.

Aircraft are used in tourism, the military (mostly marine infantry and ground forces), for leisure and for exploring swamp areas. The main purpose is to transport people; In some cases, payloads can also be carried. The vehicle is very agile and loud; the latter is the main point of criticism in terms of nature conservation, as it frightens the fauna.

Similarly constructed is the hydrocopter that can also drive by its skids on ice.

Alternatives

Otherwise, motorized travel in swamps is only possible to a limited extent:

  • via cleared waterways
  • on stick embankments, stick paths, dam paths, elevated paths
  • Via elevated or flooded rails, high cable cars
  • with hovercraft
  • with amphibious vehicles
  • possibly with extremely shallow boats
  • of course with aircraft , as far as a landing possibility is available
