The Aar , also known as the bell fountain in the upper reaches , is a 13.9 km long, left-hand or western tributary of the Twiste in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district in northern Hesse ( Germany ).

The Aar rises in the Waldecker Wald a few meters north of the border between Twist Valley and Bad Arolsen . Its source is in the "Homberg" parcel at around 360  m above sea level. NN on Twist Valley area between Gutshof Frederinghausen (to Twist valley-Gembeck ) in the west-northwest, the woodless Massenhauser Höhe ( 432.5  m above sea  level ) in the north, the wooded Kahlenberg ( 408.8  m above sea level ) in the south and Mengeringhausen ( to Bad Arolsen) in the southeast.

Leaving the Twist valley, the Aar flows first eastwards through the Bad Arolser area and south-eastwards through a valley in which it passes, among other things, the wooded elevations Weißer Stein (south) and Spielberg (north). Then the stream is dammed into a small pond .

After this, the Aar runs eastwards through a piece of agricultural area and then through Mengeringhausen , where it is spanned by the Warburg – Sarnau railway line and by the federal road 252 on the eastern edge of the village . Then, in a valley lined with wooded slopes, in which the Thiele flows from the northwest, it makes a winding curve southeast around the core town of Bad Arolsen. South of this river section is the amount Ring houses Hagen (also on the Hagen called; to 340.4  meters above sea level. ), Where until 2004 the training area Arolsen with Prinz-Eugen- Kaserne was. After crossing under the federal highway 450 , the stream leaves the valley and picks up the Bicke coming from the west in an agricultural area .

The Aar then flows through the Bad Arols district of Wetterburg , to the northeast of it around 1.1 km below the Twist dam at around 192  m above sea level. NN in the Diemel influx Twiste to lead .
