history

Twiste - St. Vitus Church
Municipal administration - former manor house

The place was first mentioned 1170 years ago, in 843, when Tuistai was mentioned as the property of the Corvey Monastery .

The existing since the time of foundation of the village of St. Vitus Church with a Renaissance - pulpit from 1602, named after the patron saint St. Veit . It is the largest vaulted basilica in the Waldecker Land and is the only one with a transept.

In 1349, Emperor Charles IV gave the Corvey Abbey permission to set up a free-chair court in Twiste, and the first free count was installed there in 1364. This free chair later came as a fiefdom to the Counts of Waldeck, who had received Twiste Castle with the local court in September 1455 from Landgrave Ludwig I of Hesse as part of the compensation for their waiver of inheritance claims to the County of Ziegenhain . From 1533 at the latest, Twiste belonged to the free court in Mengeringhausen .

The lords "von Twiste" , Ministeriale and feudal men of the Counts of Waldeck, had a small castle and an estate in the village for a long time from 1525 as a Waldeck fief . At the time of the Peasant Wars , Hans von Twiste stood by the Counts of Waldeck in the fight against Götz von Berlichingen . The integration of the first places (including Twiste) in the county or in the later principality of Waldeck (from 1712) formed the basis for a peaceful cohesion secured by rifle guilds.

For many centuries there was a tenth-free estate in Twiste , the so-called "Schäferhof", the Waldeck count's or princely house. This manor in the center of the village was fully cultivated until the 1970s and shaped the central village image. Today the local administration of the community Twistingal is housed in the former manor house. The former stables, barns and apartments of the milker had to give way to the new buildings of the multi-purpose hall, the fire station and a tennis court.

On December 31, 1971, as part of the regional reform in Hesse , Twiste was merged with five other places to form the new large municipality of Twistingal.
