View of Waldeck from the castle

Waldeck is one of the two largest districts of the city of Waldeck in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district in northern Hesse in Germany and one of the most frequented tourist destinations in the Waldecker Land .

The place was the residence of the Counts of Waldeck until 1655 . Due to its location on the Edersee, which was completed in 1914, Waldeck became a state-recognized health resort . Today you can find tourist offers for recreation and leisure activities here. Waldeck Castle is dominated by Waldeck Castle .

In 1232 the Waldeck settlement was first mentioned in a document from the Netze monastery . There it is mentioned universitas civitatis de waldeke . The city wall was built around 1250 and had three city gates , including the castle gate and the Netzer gate. The gate tower of the Netzer Tor also served as a prison. It was sold to a farmer in 1891, who demolished it and used the masonry to build a barn.

Until 1254 the place was also called "Rode", which indicates that it may have been created by clearing . The first city seal dates from 1266, the first verifiable mayor is mentioned in 1311. Around 1500 Waldeck was "only" a village with a city wall with around 300 inhabitants and was behind Bad Wildungen and Korbach in terms of size and economic power. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the population was only around 400; Korbach , Arolsen and Bad Wildungen were the larger towns in the county of Waldeck at that time .

reformation

In 1521 Count Philipp IV. Von Waldeck-Wildungen became a supporter of the Reformation doctrine at the Diet of Worms . Philipp invited the Lutheran preacher Johann Hefentreger (also Johannes Trygophorus), who had been expelled from Fritzlar in Mainz, to a trial sermon, which he gave on April 29, 1526 in the chapel of Friedrichstein Castle in Alt-Wildungen . Philip IV and his uncle Philip III. von Waldeck-Eisenberg, who had to decide for both parts of the county on church matters, appointed him pastor of the city of Waldeck. Hefentreger preached on June 17, 1526 for the first time according to Luther's teachings . From here he became a reformer of the county of Waldeck. Today two memorial plaques at the entrances of the town church commemorate this day.

Relocation of the residence

Waldeck Castle was the residence of the ruling Counts of Waldeck until 1655 , after which they moved to Arolsen in the Arolsen Castle . After that, Waldeck Castle was used as a former residence for a wide variety of purposes. The place lost its importance until modern times due to the relocation of the residence, but was still the namesake of the county.

City Church

City Church

On May 13, 1236, Bishop Wilhelm von Havelberg consecrated a chapel in Waldeck to St. Mary and subordinated it to the Cistercian convent of Marienthal in Netze, which was founded in 1228 . It is not clear whether this chapel was on the site of the current church, as the sources about the foundation of the castle also mention a different location.

The choir is the oldest part of the church, construction of which began around 1300. While stately new churches were built throughout the county in the 14th century, the town church, which has existed since 1300, only received an extension. This was a north aisle and a new south wall. The choir got a new tracery window on the south side. The citizens and the Counts of Waldeck had only a very limited influence on this branch church of the Netze monastery.

In 1483, the town church received a carved altar with painted wings, a Marian altar, which represents the coronation of Mary by the Trinity. The image of the predella, the decorated base of the altar structure, shows Christ with the twelve apostles. Especially in the late Middle Ages was the mother of Jesus revered. The altar was donated by Margarete Huhn in the former Augustinian Choir Women Abbey of Berich . She is depicted with her coat of arms in the lower corner of the left wing.

From the original single-nave church building, only the choir and western wall have been preserved. The ship in its current form was expanded in the 16th century. As with the fortified churches in Bergheim and Affoldern , the tower was built on the northeast side of the choir. Two of the four bells date from the 14th century. The church tower probably also had four small corner towers in the past.

Jewish Cemetery

In the 19th century, members of the Levy and Simon families lived in Waldeck. Presumably the Levy family initiated the construction of a cemetery, which was obviously a private cemetery rather than a Jewish community cemetery. Seventeen burials are known over the decades, the last in 1913. The size of the cemetery is 0.82 ares . Five tombstones are still in place today. The cemetery is near what is now the Edertalsperre .

railroad

The railway lines touching the local area were opened to traffic on the following dates:

  • Bad Wildungen – Buhlen on February 1, 1909
  • Buhlen-Waldeck on May 1, 1911
  • Waldeck – Korbach on June 1, 1912

Economy and Infrastructure

Companies

From 1921 to 2000 the Mauser-Werke Waldeck existed in the village , which in 1997 was still considered the leading manufacturer of office furniture in Germany in terms of quantity. The company has long been one of the largest employers in the region.

Edertalsperre

Edersee from Waldeck Castle

The size and economic importance of Waldeck changed suddenly with the construction of the Edertalsperre (1908–1914). The people of Waldeck recognized early on that the building would open up a new way of improving one's own economic situation. The place, which until then had been more of an agricultural area, gradually turned tourism into its largest source of income.
