Cities in the former principality of Waldeck
The cities in the former principality of Waldeck were, with few exceptions (such as Korbach and Lower Wildungen ) very small and were, with the exception of Arolsen , its town charter in the 13th or 14th century.
history
The early Counts of Waldeck were, compared to the neighboring Landgraves of Hesse and Counts of Ziegenhain , quite generous in granting city rights to communities in their domain. In 1910, the Principality of Waldeck (excluding Pyrmont ) had around 52,400 inhabitants in a total of 110 places on a total area of 1055 km 2 , with 13 places having municipal rights. In the Ziegenhain district, which emerged from the county of Ziegenhain, there were only four cities among the 101 communities on a total area of 585 km 2 with a total of 36,000 inhabitants: Treysa , Ziegenhain , Neukirchen and Schwarzenborn .
Five of the Waldeck cities are shown in the volume Topographia Hassiae et Regionum Vicinarum of Topographia Germaniae from 1655 by Matthäus Merian the Elder.
