The former district of Schwabmünchen belonged to the Bavarian administrative district of Swabia . Until the beginning of the regional reform in Bavaria at the beginning of the 1970s, the district comprised 32 municipalities. His former area is now in the Augsburg district .

District Office
The Schwabmünchen district office was created on October 1, 1900 through the spin-off of 32 municipalities from the Augsburg district office .

On January 1, 1939, the designation district was introduced as everywhere else in the German Reich . The district office became the district of Schwabmünchen.
On July 1, 1972, the district of Schwabmünchen was dissolved. Its communities were merged with communities in the districts of Augsburg, Wertingen , Mindelheim , Donauwörth and Neuburg an der Donau as part of the regional reform in Bavaria to form the new district of Augsburg-West . On May 1, 1973, the new district was given the current name of the Augsburg district .

The municipality of Klosterlechfeld was called Lechfeld until April 16, 1928 .
License Plate
On July 1, 1956, the district was assigned the distinguishing mark SMÜ when the vehicle registration number that is still valid today was introduced . It was issued until August 3, 1974. Since March 1, 2017, it has been issued again in the Augsburg district due to license plate liberalization .
