The district of Füssen belonged to the Bavarian administrative district of Swabia . When it was dissolved in the regional reform in 1972, the district comprised 18 communities. The former district area is now part of the Ostallgäu district .

Important places

The most populous communities were Füssen , Pfronten , Schwangau and Nesselwang . Füssen was 808 m above sea level. d. M. the highest district town in Bavaria.

Neighboring areas

In 1972 the district bordered clockwise in the west, beginning with the districts of Sonthofen , Kempten (Allgäu) , Marktoberdorf , Schongau and Garmisch-Partenkirchen . In the south, the district bordered the Austrian state of Tyrol (Reutte district).

history

District Office

The district office in 1862 feet followed the same area district court earlier order feet .

On August 4, 1865, the community of Schwangau moved from the district office of Schongau to the district office of Füssen.

On the occasion of the reform of the layout of the Bavarian district offices, the district office of Füssen received two more municipalities from the district office of Schongau ( Buching and Trauchgau ) on January 1, 1880 and ceded the municipality of Lengenwang to the district office of Oberdorf .

On January 1, 1939, the uniform designation Landkreis was introduced in the German Reich . So the district office became the district of Füssen.

On July 1, 1972, the district of Füssen was merged with large parts of the districts of Kaufbeuren and Marktoberdorf as part of the regional reform in Bavaria to form the new district of Ostallgäu , which until May 1, 1973 still bore the provisional name of the district of Marktoberdorf .

The community of Faulenbach was incorporated into the city of Füssen on November 1, 1921. The two communities Pfronten-Berg and Pfronten-Steinach were merged on April 1, 1935 to form the community of Pfronten .

License Plate

On July 1, 1956, the district was assigned the distinctive sign FÜS when the vehicle registration number that is still valid today was introduced . The license plates of the districts of Füssen and Marktoberdorf ( MOD ) remained valid for a few years after these districts were dissolved on July 1, 1972. In particular because of violent protests from the former Füssen district, the OAL license plate was only valid for the entire district without restrictions since August 1, 1979 .

Since July 10, 2013, the FÜS distinguishing mark has been available again in the Ostallgäu district due to the license plate liberalization .
