Chalking

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lime blowing is a harmful reaction that destroys concrete . This chemical reaction is mostly due to an incorrectly composed cement , namely when there is more calcium oxide in the cement than can be bound by silica , aluminum oxide and iron oxide .

This free, unbound lime, which is embedded in a dense structure of minerals , reacts very slowly with water; this reaction is not yet complete even when the cement has already solidified. There is an increase in volume, comparable to the slaking of the lime, whereby the cementitious structure is worn down.
