The district of Sonthofen belonged to the Bavarian administrative district of Swabia . Before the start of the regional reform in Bavaria at the beginning of the 1970s, the district comprised 33 municipalities. The former district area is now part of the Oberallgäu district .

Starting in 1972, the district bordered clockwise in the northwest on the districts of Lindau (Lake Constance) , Kempten (Allgäu) and Füssen . In the south the district bordered on Austria ; in the south-east on Tyrol and in the south-west on Vorarlberg .

history

District Office

The Sonthofen district office was formed in 1862 through the merger of the older district courts Immenstadt and Sonthofen .

On April 1, 1927, the Sonthofen District Office ceded the communities of Moosbach and Petersthal to the Kempten District Office .

On January 1, 1939, the uniform imperial designation Landkreis was introduced. This is how the district office became the district of Sonthofen.

After the annexation of Austria , from October 15, 1938 to 8/9. May and September 19, 1945, the previously Austrian communities Jungholz and Mittelberg to the district office and district of Sonthofen.

On July 1, 1970, the Stiefenhofen community was reclassified from the Sonthofen district to the Lindau district (Lake Constance).

On July 1, 1972, the district of Sonthofen was merged with most of the district of Kempten (Allgäu) to form the new district of Oberallgäu as part of the regional reform in Bavaria .

The municipalities of Missen and Wilhams were merged on January 1, 1959 to form the municipality of Missen-Wilhams .

License Plate

On July 1, 1956, the district was assigned the distinguishing symbol SF when the license plates that are still valid today were introduced . It was issued in the district until August 3, 1974. From August 5, 1974 to February 10, 1979 it was issued in the entire Oberallgäu district .
