history

Hurter map 1645

In a document from the St. Gallen Monastery of September 23, 860, Willihere gave Abbot Grimaldus a hoof in the forest near Werimbretiscella . The document researcher Neugart considers it possible that the later place Rauhenzell was named with Werimbretiscella . The proximity to the St. Gallen monastery is also demonstrated by the fact that the parish church was consecrated to St. Otmar . In addition, on the Hurter map from 1645, Rauhenzell west of the Iller and thus, like St. Gallen, probably belongs to the bishopric of Konstanz .

The political community of Rauhenzell with the wastes Egg and Oberau was formed in 1833. Until then, the three settlements belonged to the political municipality of Untermaiselstein . The history of Rauhenzell is connected with the rule Rauhlaubenberg and its successor, the rule Rauhenzell of the Lords of Pappus-Tratzberg.

Rauhenzell Castle

Rauhenzell Castle

Rauhenzell Castle was built in 1555 by the Lords of Laubenberg as a three-storey rectangular building. In 1647 the male line of the Laubenberger dies out and the rule of Rauhenzell falls to the House of Pappus-Trazberg, whose member Johann Andreas II is later elevated to the status of imperial baron by the emperor.

In 1878 the facade of the palace was redesigned in a baroque style. The rest of the late Renaissance character is retained. In 1934, Baron Eckart von Pappus and Trazberg died as the last male descendant of his family. Today the castle is owned by the Barons von Lerchenfeld . It is inhabited and cannot be visited.

Rauhenzell with the castle was the scene of the rescue operations carried out by Alfred Weitnauer for valuable German cultural assets during the Second World War. In his book Final Balance , he tells of a "funeral with only a few victims" in the village cemetery of Rauhenzell with his own sense of humor. The most valuable holdings of the Hessian State Museum in Darmstadt , which had previously been moved to Rauhenzell Castle, were brought to safety from approaching French troops during this action.
