On January 1, 1898, the district office of Nuremberg municipalities ceded to the district office of Hersbruck.
The district office of Lauf an der Pegnitz was formed in 1908 by hiving off municipalities from the district offices of Hersbruck and Pegnitz.
On January 1, 1911, the municipality of Alfeld of the Sulzbach district office was reclassified to the Hersbruck district office.
