Richard Dertsch (born January 17, 1894 in Ob , today the municipality of Bidingen , Ostallgäu district ; † December 14, 1981 in Kaufbeuren ) was a German historian and archivist .

Life

After attending grammar school in Kempten and Dillingen , Dertsch began studying German , history and English at the University of Munich in 1913 . In the First World War he initially participated as a volunteer nurse, in 1917 he was still trained as an infantryman , but did not come to the front. After resuming his studies at the end of 1918, he was part of the Wolf Freikorps in the fight against revolutionary troops in Bavarian Swabia . In 1924 he was at the University of Munich with a dissertation on the history of colonization of the eastern Bavarian Central Swabia doctorate .

Dertsch had been working at the Mainz City Archives since 1926 . In March 1930 he became the first official of the city of Mainz to join the NSDAP and, for political reasons, was replaced in 1934 by the current rulers in the place of the previous head of the Mainz city library and the city archive, Aloys Ruppel . Due to his active Catholicism, however, there were conflicts between Dertsch and the Nazi regime. When his colleague Elisabeth Darapsky was arrested in October 1943 for statements hostile to the state, he wrote her a comforting letter in prison, whereupon he was imprisoned for several weeks, finally removed from office and temporarily replaced by Ruppel.

After the end of the war he applied to be the head of the Freiburg im Breisgau city archives , but finally got a position as director of the city archives and the city library in Kaufbeuren im Allgäu. Since then, he has made a name for himself primarily through research into medieval and early modern documents, place names and the history of settlement in eastern Swabia . To this day, its regests form one of the most important foundations for research into the region's medieval history.

In 1977 he was honored with the Aventine Medal by the Association of Bavarian History Societies.

Dertsch was a member of the Commission for Bavarian State History at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and since 1949 a founding member of the Swabian Research Association . He was also a member of the advisory board of the Görres Society , the board of the Association for Franconian Church History and other associations and organizations.
