history

Altenbach was first mentioned in a document in 1401. The emergence of the place is likely to be at the end of the 12th century or the 13th century and was probably carried out as a clearing settlement from Schriesheim in connection with the high medieval development of the country . At that time, the colonization came from the Lords of Hirschberg-Strahlberg. The place was initially a fiefdom of the bishopric of Worms and came to the Electoral Palatinate in 1705 through an exchange of territory . From 1726 school was held in Altenbach. The place received its own mark in 1745 . From 1803 the village belonged to Baden . The people of Altenbach originally hired themselves almost exclusively in forestry and agriculture as lumberjacks , charcoal burners or small farmers , as well as stonemasons in the surrounding quarries. As early as the 19th century, the structure of employment changed, so that the place also became a place of residence for bricklayers , plasterers and carpenters who had their jobs in the towns and communities of the nearby Rhine plain , which often took hours on foot. It was not until the 1920s that the town was connected to the public transport network by a bus. The place had around 600 inhabitants in 1939. Due to the Second World War , the population increased by around 300 people, mainly evacuees from Mannheim, which was badly damaged by the war, as well as displaced persons from the Sudetenland and Hungary . After another strong population growth since the 1960s, mainly due to the influx from outside after the designation of large new building areas and the creation of a site plan by the Heidelberg district office and the community of Schriesheim, the population has stabilized in recent years because there are no more new building plots to be expelled. On January 1, 1972 Altenbach was incorporated into Schriesheim.

Altenbach has two churches (the Evangelical Johanneskirche and the Catholic Church of St. Michael), an ATM, physiotherapy, a stationery shop, a baker, a dentist and family doctor, as well as a primary school and a kindergarten.

There is also a lively club life. The sports facility "Auf der Kipp" houses a fitness and leisure facility with tennis, squash and badminton courts, a soccer field, the training ground of the motorsport club and a shooting range with an air rifle system and an outdoor archery system (up to 50 m).

The new town center was inaugurated in 2015 and has delighted children (artificial stream to play) and adults (boules alley) since then. Furthermore, the adjoining school yard and the area of the Protestant church were integrated into the center of the town so that they flow into one another.

Hasso Plattner is probably one of the best-known “Altenbachers” who moved here .
