The municipality Rheurdt [ ʁøɐt ] is located on the Lower Rhine in the west of North Rhine-Westphalia and is a municipality belonging to the district of Kleve in the administrative district of Düsseldorf .

Spatial location

Rheurdt is located on the left bank of the Rhine in the Lower Rhine lowlands at an altitude of 30 to 80  m above sea level. NN . The Nenneper Fleuth, the Littardsche Kendel and the Landwehrbach flow through the municipality. The Rheurdter and Schaephuysener Heights, a terminal moraine from the Saale Ice Age, run in a north-south direction .

The district of Kengen belongs to the village of Rheurdt, the districts of Finkenberg, Lind, Neufeld and Saelhuysen (pronounced: Saalhüsen) belong to Schaephuysen.

history

The municipality of Rheurdt was mentioned for the first time in 1294 as Rurde or Rorde . Until 1713 the individual communities and villages of Rheurdt belonged to the Duchy of Geldern , then came to Prussia and were under French rule from 1798 to 1814 . After the Congress of Vienna in 1815, the associated localities came to the Rheinberg district , which was merged with the Geldern district in 1823 . This association was reversed in 1857 and the seat of the district was moved to Moers .

Territorial reform

The municipality of Rheurdt came into being in its current form on July 1, 1969 during the first municipal reorganization program in North Rhine-Westphalia . The communities Rheurdt and Schaephuysen were merged to form the new community Rheurdt.

On January 1, 1975, in the course of the second reorganization program in North Rhine-Westphalia, the old Kleve district was merged with the former Geldern district and parts of the Moers and Rees districts to form the new Greater Kleve district on the Lower Rhine.

Municipal council

The Rheurdt community council consists of a total of 20 members. Since the last local election on May 25, 2014, the CDU (42.4%, 9 seats), SPD (28.7%, 6 seats), FDP (11.6%, 2 seats) and Greens (15.7%) have been in the local council %, 3 seats).

Community banner

The municipality of Rheurdt was granted permission to use a coat of arms, a seal and a banner with a certificate from the District President in Düsseldorf dated August 11, 1970.

The heraldic description reads: “In blue a silver deer head with a floating golden cross between the antlers; in the head of the shield three golden apples in bars. "

The coat of arms was designed after the municipal reorganization in 1969 and combines elements of the Rheurdt parish priest St. Nikolaus, the golden apples, with the legend of the Schaephuysen parish patron St. Hubertus. The colors gold and blue are those of the Duchy of Geldern.

The Burgerpark is a public green space in the heart of Rheurdt, which is right next to the Catholic Church and where traditionally the Easter bonfire, the Martin fire and the annual shooting of the shooters are held. It is also used for other special events by various clubs. The Rheurdter club tree has also been standing there for several years.

Oermter mountain

The Oermter Berg is one of the largest terminal moraines on the left Lower Rhine. Today it is a popular excursion destination and local recreation area. Until the 16th century, the mountain was even used as a wine-growing area by the nearby Kamp monastery . The wine is said to have only served as an altar wine.
