history

House Issum

A disc brooch and a belt buckle from the early 7th century, which are kept in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn under the location “Sevelen”, suggest that today's Sevelen district was built in the early Middle Ages . In a list of acquisitions of goods by Archbishop Philip I of Heinsberg from Cologne from 1190, a place Cevele is mentioned, which is probably identical to Sevelen.

Today's main town Issum was first mentioned in a document in 1338, when the “glory and the property that is in Issum and the surrounding area” was returned by Vogt Gerardus de Belle to Duke Rainald II of Geldern . The Issum Castle was a moated castle, which was located on the Fleuth and today, as Haus Issum, houses parts of the municipal administration and the local history museum "His-Törchen". In the following centuries the rulership changed hands continuously through sale, pledging and marriage. So Issum u. a. the Elector of Cologne , the Count of Moers, the Geldrian Hereditary Marshal von Boedberg and the Klevian Hereditary Marshal von Pallant.

The district of Issum belonged to the Electorate of Cologne until 1798. The Sevelen district belonged to the Duchy of Geldern until 1713 , when it became part of Prussia . From 1798 to 1814 both districts were under French rule until the entire Lower Rhine was added to the Kingdom of Prussia at the Congress of Vienna in 1814 . Thereupon, on April 23, 1816, Issum came to the district of Geldern as one of over 40 districts of the province of Jülich-Kleve-Berg , the later Rhine province, as part of the Prussian administrative organization .

The localities of the community Issum belonged after their establishment to the area of the Archdiocese of Cologne . With the reorganization of the Dutch dioceses by King Philip II in 1559, the village of Sevelen fell to the diocese of Roermond . Under French rule in 1802 both localities were assigned to the newly founded diocese of Aachen . The now still valid membership of the diocese of Münster was established in 1821 at the request of the Kingdom of Prussia.

In the community of Issum there has been a Catholic parish of St. Anna since February 12, 2005 with the parish church of St. Antonius in Sevelen and the branch church of St. Nicholas in Issum. The Catholic parish of St. Anna consists of the two formerly independent parishes of these districts.

There is a Protestant parish in the Issum district. In the Sevelen district a parish hall of the Protestant parish of Hoerstgen. Therefore Issum belongs to the evangelical church district Kleve and Sevelen to the evangelical church district Moers. Both church districts belong to the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland .

In the community of Issum there is a New Apostolic and the free Christian community in Issum.

From 1764 to the Second World War there was a Jewish community in Issum . In 1855 she bought a piece of land with a barn and built a synagogue , which was inaugurated on December 16, 1865. At that time the Jewish community numbered 50 members. In 1900 the Issum synagogue became the property of the synagogue community of Geldern. In the following years, more and more Jews moved from Issum and around 1930 it was no longer possible to hold a church service because the required number of ten religiously responsible male Jews no longer came about. In 1935, the synagogue was sold to a citizen of Issum who used it as a storage room. It therefore escaped the fate of the Geldern synagogue on the night of the pogrom and remained in place. The members of the Jewish community in Issum died during the Holocaust . The synagogue was bought in 1987 by the community of Issum, listed as a historical monument and restored. It is one of the few remaining old synagogues in North Rhine-Westphalia .

Territorial reform

The municipality of Issum was established in its current form on July 1, 1969 during the first municipal reorganization program in North Rhine-Westphalia . The communities of Issum and Sevelen were merged to form the new community of Issum.

On January 1, 1975, in the course of the second reorganization program in North Rhine-Westphalia, the old Kleve district was merged with the former Geldern district and parts of the Moers and Rees districts to form the new Greater Kleve district on the Lower Rhine.

The coat of arms was designed by Walther Bergmann after the municipal reorganization in 1969 and approved by the Düsseldorf District President on June 27, 1973. It contains elements of the two old municipal coats of arms of Issum and Sevelen. The former municipality of Issum had the leaping stag in its coat of arms since 1937 . This coat of arms shows this coat of arms as early as the 16th century, when the Lords of Issum exercised jurisdiction in Issum. The old coat of arms of Sevelen was not created until 1959, but it dates back to the 13th century: it pointed to the booming pottery trade in Sevelen and the church patron St. Antonius with four crosses and a medlar flower .
