Walther Bergmann (born May 28, 1914 in Düsseldorf , † February 18, 1979 in La Laguna , Tenerife ) was a German painter, book designer and graphic designer specializing in commercial graphics and internationally known for his poster art .

Life

Bergmann studied at the State Art Academy in Düsseldorf from 1934 to 1936 and opened his own studio there in 1937. Six years of military service followed. After 1947 he joined the workshop community and training institute for all arts " Der Baukreis ", founded in Hamburg in 1946, and took up a teaching position as head of the advertising graphics department at their Hilden branch . After two years he left the building group and started his own business. He designed numerous posters for trade fairs, the Düsseldorf Opera House and Düsseldorf Theater, and thus also took part in competitions. He also designed postage stamps for the Deutsche Bundespost , company logos and did the illustration of books for several publishers. In 1964 he was appointed head of the graphic design course at the Werkkunstschule Aachen ( FH Aachen since 1971 ). In parallel to his teaching activities, he continued to work as a freelancer. Caused by the regional reform carried out in North Rhine-Westphalia from 1966 , he created more than two dozen new coats of arms for cities, communities and districts in the Rhineland .

Bergmann was also involved in the design of trade fair stands, for example in 1949 at the German Industry Show, New York City, in 1953 at the core show Mensch und Technik, Düsseldorf, and at the 40th and 41st IAA , both in Frankfurt am Main .

Bergmann was a member of the Presidium of the Federation of German Graphic Designers (BDG) and a member of the German Werkbund . He was also a member of the Düsseldorfer Künstlerverein Malkasten (KVM) .
