The Rheurdt / Littard state forest is a nature reserve on the Lower Rhine in North Rhine-Westphalia , which is located in Rheurdt near the border with Neukirchen-Vluyn and covers an area of ​​around 144 hectares . It was first placed under protection by ordinance in 2004 and has been designated as FFH area DE-4504-301 Staatsforst Rheurdt / Littard since 2013 with the same layout , which means that it belongs to the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas .

The Rheurdt / Littard state forest is a closed mixed deciduous forest area. It is characterized by common oak - hornbeam forests and acidic beech forests and has a very low proportion of coniferous wood. The heart of the nature reserve is the almost 25 hectare Littard natural forest . There is no management in this area, so that wild plants and animals can develop undisturbed.

In the north, east and west, the Rheurdt / Littard state forest is surrounded by a ditch and still water system of former peat hollows in the neighboring Rheurdt-Schaephuysener Kuhlenzug nature reserve . The relatively near-natural habitat is separated from the surrounding agriculturally used areas by the Kuhlenzug.

The area is significant for nature conservation mainly due to the extent of its natural deciduous forest communities. The black woodpecker lives in the Rheurdt / Littard state forest and the kingfisher lives in two small ponds in the forest .
