Cerstin Schmidt (born March 5, 1963 in Zwickau ) is a former German luge athlete .

Cerstin Schmidt has been racing luge with BSG Lok Zwickau since 1973 . In 1977 she was delegated to the KJS in Oberwiesenthal . At the Children's and Youth Partakiads in 1977 and 1979, she reached second place. Her first international appearance in 1982 at the Junior World Championships failed thoroughly due to a fall. Since 1984 she started for the national team of the GDR, where she replaced Bettina Schmidt . In 1985 she celebrated her first big success with second place at the World Championships in Oberhof behind her compatriot Steffi Martin and in front of Birgit Weise , who also came from the GDR. In addition, she won the overall World Cup in 1985. A year later she was European champion in Hammarstrand, ahead of Steffi Martin and Ute Oberhoffner in another triple victory for the GDR. In 1987 she celebrated by winning the world championship in Igls in another triple triumph of the GDR female tobogganists (ahead of Gabriele Kohlisch and Ute Oberhoffner). She ended her career in 1988 by winning the bronze medal at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary in the next triple triumph of the then all-dominant tobogganers from the GDR (behind Steffi Walter and Ute Oberhoffner). In 1984, 1986 and 1987 she was GDR champion. In 1986 she was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver and in 1988 in bronze.

Schmidt studied advertising economics in Berlin and married the sports photographer Harald Almonat in 1988. She started for the SC Traktor Oberwiesenthal and was trained by Franz Schneider and Wilfried Jüchert. She lives in Berlin today.
