District reforms in Prussia
The article District reforms in Prussia covers the implementation of area reforms at the district level, i.e. the independent cities, the associated districts and the wider districts from the early 19th century.
Counties or counties and other names
- Until December 31, 1938 it was basically called a circle . Only in those districts whose district town was independent (formed a separate urban district) or left the district association, the designation district became common.
- The regulation that came into force on January 1, 1939 for numerous municipal associations in the German Reich did not apply in Prussia, where they were still called districts.
Independent cities or urban districts and other names
- Until March 31, 1887, the city that did not belong to any district was called Immediatstadt .
- From April 1, 1887 to December 31, 1938 it was a city district .
- As of January 1, 1939, the name is a district-free city . But especially in Prussia there were exceptions. So were z. B. in North Rhine-Westphalia only on October 1, 1953, all city districts became independent cities.
