from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Danziger Höhe was from 1887 to 1920, a district in the administrative district of Gdansk the Prussian province of West Prussia . From 1920 to 1939 it existed as the district of Danziger Höhe in the Free City of Danzig . His area is now in the Polish powiat Gdański . The seat of the district office was in the sand pit 24 in Danzig.

    German Empire

Due to the continuous growth of the population in the 19th century, the areas of some districts in West Prussia turned out to be too large. It seemed necessary to reduce the size of the circles. As a result, on October 1, 1887, the new districts of Danziger Höhe and Danziger Niederung emerged in the area of the Danzig district , while the southern part of the Danzig district fell to the newly established Dirschau district . The district offices for the two new Gdansk districts were set up in Gdansk . On April 1, 1902, the two rural communities of Heiligenbrunn and Zigankenberg and the Hochstrieß manor district left the district and were incorporated into the urban district of Danzig. On April 1, 1914, the rural communities of Brösen, Saspe and Schellmühl followed.

With the entry into force of the Versailles Treaty on January 10, 1920, the Danziger Höhe district fell to the newly formed Free City of Danzig . Its boundaries cut through the historical district boundaries, so that the Danziger Höhe district was re-cut:

    • The communities of Bissau, Gluckau and Ramkau in the Danziger Höhe district fell to Poland.
    • The communities Barenhütte, Ellerbruch, Grenzacker, Groß Paglau, Oberhölle, Ochsenkopf, Scharshütte, Schwarzhütte, Strauchhütte, Strippau, Trockenhütte and Wiesenthal of the dissolved Berent district came to the Danziger Höhe district.
    • The communities Golmkau, Hohenstein, Klempin, Kohling, Lamenstein, Postelau, Rambeltsch, Sobbowitz and Uhlkau of the dissolved Dirschau district came to the Danziger Höhe district.
    • The communities Babenthal, Buschkau, Czapielken, Glasberg, Klanau, Maidahnen, Mariensee, Marschau, Neuendorf, Niedersommerkau, Oberhütte, Oberkahlbude, Obersommerkau, Ostroschken, Ottomin, Pomlau, Prangenau, Schönbeck, Stangenwalde and Tiefenthal of the dissolved Karthaus district came to the district of Danziger Höhe .
    • The city of Sopot from the dissolved Neustadt district in West Prussia came to the Danziger Höhe district.

From 1920 the district was referred to as the Danziger Höhe district. In contrast to Germany, where the term district was introduced consistently in 1939, it was valid in the Free City of Danzig from 1920 according to Article 68 of its constitution.

Sopot left the district on March 15, 1920 and was elevated to an urban district . On July 1, 1926, the rural community and manor district of Oliva were reclassified from the district of Danziger Höhe to the urban district of Danzig. On October 1, 1929, a regional reform took place in line with developments in Prussia, in which all manor districts except for the uninhabited forest estate districts were dissolved and assigned to neighboring rural communities. The municipalities of Altdorf, Brentau and Ohra were incorporated into the city of Danzig in 1933, as was the municipality of Emaus in 1934.

After the invasion of Poland , the area of the Free City of Danzig was annexed by the German Reich on September 1, 1939. On December 1, 1939, the district of Danziger Höhe was incorporated into the new district of Danzig . In spring 1945 the former district was occupied by the Red Army and has belonged to Poland ever since.

    Division into communal units

As municipal units, the Danziger Höhe district comprised municipalities and districts (forest and manor districts ) until 1920 . As a result of the new state borders, nine municipal units fell to the Powiat Kartuski in the new Pomeranian Voivodeship in 1920 , whereas more municipal units were added from other districts (21 from the Karthaus district , 13 from the Berent district , 12 from the Dirschau district , for a few months still a city from the Neustadt district in West Prussia ). The Danziger Höhe gradually gave up 17 municipal units through incorporation into the city of Danzig. Likewise, manor and forest districts were successively raised to communities, added to neighboring communities or merged with other districts to form a new community, until finally in 1929 the change in legal form became mandatory for all remaining districts. Only the Oliva forest district remained. The table brings together official names that changed many times, occasionally even several times, and common variants of the same. The reason for the name changes were v. a. politically intentional efforts to take the ancestral stamp of the toponyms and to Germanize or Polonize them. For the sources of the directory, see the footnotes.
