A forest district ( Forstgutsgebiet ) is a delimited forest area and a hierarchical level of the forest administration structure . The forest district is divided into at least some forest districts , by the forest rangers are cared for. The forest district manager of a forest enterprise or the head of a forest office (formerly known as the head forester ) is responsible for looking after the forest district ( forest management , afforestation , tree felling, etc.) .

The total territory of the forest district can include 3,700 square kilometers (370,000 ha) (for example, forest district Oberlausitz ). The forest area can range from 18,000 hectares (e.g., Reinhardswald forest estate ) to 120,000 hectares.

Until 1966, many unincorporated areas in Bavaria had the designation forest district in their name. According to the announcement of the Bavarian State Ministry of the Interior of September 16, 1966 No. IB 3 - 3000/10 - 9 on the existence and names of the community-free areas. Bayerischer Staatsanzeiger No. 39 of September 30, 1966 , this designation, as well as the designations water district and lake district in Bavaria, should no longer be used.
