Brzeźno (pronounced ˈbʐɛʓnɔ , German Brösen , Kashubian Brzeźno ) is a district of Gdansk in Poland . The district covers an area of 2.74 km² and has over 13,457 inhabitants with a population density of around 4,900 inhabitants / km².
Brösen became a seaside resort shortly after 1800 and was an independent health resort on the Baltic Sea until 1914 . Today the district has a pier again and a beach that is only a few minutes away from the tram stops.
geography
The Gdansk district is located directly on the Baltic Sea and borders the Nowy Port district ( Neufahrwasser ) in the east and Groß Przymorze ( Konradshammer ) in the west .
history
Brösen was the first seaside resort on the Bay of Danzig . A bathhouse was built for General Rapp as early as 1808, which was expanded in 1810, but fell victim to a storm surge before March 1813. In March 1813 the entire village was destroyed by a great fire.
From 1818 Brösen belonged to the district of Danzig . A new bath house was built in 1820, a warm bath in 1840. The small health resort received a great boost from 1867 when the railway connection from Gdańsk Leege Tor station to Neufahrwasser was set up. Kremser transported the spa guests from the train station or from the steamer landing stage on the harbor canal to the town. In 1871, Brösen came to Germany with Prussia . When the district of Danzig was dissolved, Brösen came to the new district of Danziger Höhe in 1887 .
In 1900 the place could be connected to the Gdansk tram network via Neufahrwasser. At the same time Brösen received his first pier of 100 m length. In the following years the place was also connected to the tram via Langfuhr. The population increased tenfold in the years from 1871 to 1910 to 2,500 inhabitants.
The rural community Brösen left the district of Danziger Höhe and was incorporated into the city of Danzig on April 1, 1914. A newly built bathing establishment was demolished for military reasons at the beginning of the World War and rebuilt in 1919. The remains of a beach battery are still in the Haffner Park today.
With Danzig, Brösen belonged to the Danzig mandate of the League of Nations from 1920 to 1939 . 1922–1926 the Catholic St. Antonius Church was built. In 1939, in an act not recognized by international law , the Third Reich annexed the mandate territory and incorporated it into the occupation authorities of Danzig-West Prussia , to which Bröse (like all of Danzig) belonged until the end of the Second World War .
After the Second World War, Brzeźno was connected to the Gdańsk rapid transit railway SKM as early as 1951 . In 2002 Brzeźno was the terminus of this route and in 2005 the train service to there was also discontinued.
1993–1996 a new, 130 m long pier was built, but it is not at the old location.
There are currently plans to rebuild the old Kurhaus in a similar form.
