geography

Neighboring areas

The Rhein-Wupper circle bordered 1,974 clockwise starting in the northwest to the county Dusseldorf-Mettmann , in the cities of Solingen , Remscheid and Wuppertal , the Ennepe-Ruhr district , the county Lüdenscheid , Oberbergischen and the Rheinisch-Bergisch district , to the independent cities of Leverkusen and Cologne and to the Grevenbroich district .

history

founding

The district was created through the merger of the districts of Solingen and Lennep , which was implemented on August 1, 1929 on the basis of the law on the municipal reorganization of the Rhenish-Westphalian industrial area .

Due to this law, the city of Lennep and other communities were spun off from the Lennep district and incorporated into the independent city of Remscheid , which had already left the district in 1888. The independent city of Solingen , which left the district of Solingen in 1896 , was also enlarged at its expense, despite the fact that it was not part of the district.

The remaining cities and municipalities of the two districts were combined to form the district of Solingen-Lennep. On August 3, 1931, the name was changed to Rhein-Wupper-Kreis, which took into account the fact that the previously named cities of Solingen and Lennep did not belong to the district. The new name referred to the location of the district on the rivers Rhine and Wupper . The new district initially formed the 20 cities and communities Baumberg , Bergisch Neukirchen , Burg an der Wupper , Burscheid , Dabringhausen , Dhünn , Hitdorf , Hückeswagen , Leichlingen , Lützenkirchen , Monheim , Opladen, Radevormwald , Rheindorf , Richrath-Reusrath , Schlebusch , Steinbüchel , Wermelskirchen , Wiesdorf and Witzhelden . There were initially three offices in the district , the Dabringhausen office with the communities Dabringhausen and Dhünn, the Monheim office with the Monheim and Baumberg municipalities and the Schlebusch office with the Lützenkirchen, Schlebusch and Steinbüchel municipalities.

Changes to the administrative structure

  • Rheindorf, Schlebusch, Steinbüchel and Wiesdorf formed the new city of Leverkusen in 1930 . At the same time Lützenkirchen was incorporated into Opladen.
  • The municipality of Richrath-Reusrath was renamed Langenfeld (Rhld.) In 1936.
  • The Dabringhausen office was dissolved in 1938. At the same time, the Wermelskirchen office was formed, consisting of the city of Wermelskirchen and the communities of Dabringhausen and Dhünn.
  • The town of Hitdorf was incorporated into the Monheim office in 1939.
  • The municipality of Langenfeld (Rhld.) Received city rights in 1948.
  • Baumberg was incorporated into Monheim in 1951.
  • Leverkusen left the Rhein-Wupper district as a new urban district on January 1, 1955.
  • Hitdorf was incorporated into Monheim in 1960. In the same year, the municipality of Monheim received city rights.

resolution

In the course of the North Rhine-Westphalian regional reform , the Rhein-Wupper-Kreis was dissolved in accordance with Section 24 (4) of the Cologne Act with effect from January 1, 1975. At the same time, the municipal boundaries were partially redrawn:

  • Burg an der Wupper was incorporated into the city of Solingen.
  • Bergisch Neukirchen and Opladen were incorporated into the city of Leverkusen.
  • Dabringhausen and Dhünn were incorporated into the city of Wermelskirchen; the Wermelskirchen office was abolished.
  • Monheim was initially divided between Düsseldorf and Leverkusen, but the council members lodged a constitutional complaint . The constitutional court for the state of North Rhine-Westphalia gave this right and Monheim became an independent town in the Mettmann district with effect from June 1, 1976 . Hitdorf, however, stayed with Leverkusen.
  • Witzhelden was incorporated into the city of Leichlingen.
  • The village of Bergisch Born , which until then had been divided between the cities of Hückeswagen, Wermelskirchen and Remscheid, came completely to the independent city of Remscheid.
  • Burscheid, Leichlingen and Wermelskirchen were assigned to the Rheinisch-Bergisches Kreis .
  • Hückeswagen and Radevormwald were assigned to the Oberbergischer Kreis .
  • Langenfeld was assigned to the Mettmann district .
