from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gladbach-Rheydt was the name of a short-lived city in the Lower Rhine region that was created in 1929 through the merger of the cities of Odenkirchen , Rheydt and Munich-Gladbach (since 1960 Mönchengladbach ) and the communities of Giesenkirchen and Schelsen . The city was dissolved again in 1933 at the endeavors of Joseph Goebbels , who was born in Rheydt, and separated into the two independent cities of Munich Gladbach (now without a hyphen) and Rheydt. 1975 it finally came as part of the North Rhine-Westphalian local government reform by the so-called Dusseldorf-law to the incorporation of the previously independent city Rheydt into the likewise independent city Mönchengladbach.

Coat of arms of Gladbach-Rheydt
Blazon : “Gold divided by a blue wavy bar, above a growing gold-nimbed man in natural colors with a red robe and black belt, holding both hands, a green palm branch in his right hand, accompanied by six blue stars at the front and eight six-pointed blue stars at the bottom split, at the front six red bars, at the back a continuous black bar cross, on top of which is a triangular shield, inside a red-tongued and armored, black lion in gold. "
Justification for the coat of arms: In the upper half of the triangular shield is St. Vitus , the patron of the city of Mönchengladbach, is shown. He is surrounded by 14 stars, the fourteen helpers in need, to which he belongs. The blue wavy bar represents the Gladbach, what the coat of arms speaks . The six red bars of the Lords of Heppendorf and the black bar cross of the Lords of Bylandt were taken from the Rheydt coat of arms . The Jülich lion shield in the middle reminds of the common past of Mönchengladbach and Rheydt as cities in the Duchy of Jülich . The former head of the Mönchengladbach City Archives, Julius Koenzgen, designed the coat of arms of the city of Gladbach-Rheydt, which was kept from June 21, 1932 to July 31, 1933.
