Josef Deér

Josef Deér (also: József Deér ) (born March 4, 1905 in Budapest , † September 26, 1972 in Bern ) was a Hungarian historian .

The son of a pharmacist and a teacher studied history from 1923 to 1929 at the Universities of Budapest and Vienna . In 1929 he received his doctorate in Budapest. His habilitation took place with the thesis Pagan and Christian in the old Hungarian monarchy . He then taught from 1934 as a private lecturer and then from 1936 to 1940 as a professor at the University of Szeged . From 1945 to 1948 he was a professor at the University of Budapest. From 1950 Deér was initially an associate professor of medieval history at the University of Bern , and from 1954 until his retirement in 1971 he was the first full professor to teach medieval history.

His main research interests were the relationship between Byzantium and the West, the interplay of spiritual and secular rule, early medieval Hungary and the relationship between symbols and the understanding of rule.
