Wickenrode is a part of the Helsa municipality in the Kassel district .

Geographical location

Wickenrode is about 3 km (as the crow flies ) east of the center of Helsa in the Frau-Holle-Land Geo-Nature Park (Werra Valley, Meissner, Kaufunger Forest) . It is located in the Kaufunger Forest northwest of the summit of the Hirschberg ( 643.4  m above sea  level ) at about 335 to 440  m above sea level and is traversed by the Wedemann . The federal road 451 , which comes from Helsa and continues to Großalmerode ( Werra-Meißner district ), leads through it .

history

Wickenrode was first mentioned in 1293 in a deed of donation issued by the knight Burghardus Cygenberc. The certificate shows that the Knights of Zierenberg had long owned Wickenrode as a fief of the Kaufungen monastery . This is followed by further documentary mention in the years 1296, 1322, 1338, 1353, 1390, 1432 and 1433 in which reference is always made to agriculture. In these documents different spellings are used for the place: Wigkenrode, Wickenrade, Wickinrode, Wiekenrade.

Documented from the 16th century to the beginning or middle of the 19th century, Wickenrode was a center for the production of glass (with Großalmer or harbor clay ) and alum , which u. a. used in dyeing fabric. In the period between 1840 and 1880, Wickenrode was home to one of the largest chemical plants in Germany with around 300 employees. The well-known chemist Ludwig Mond had developed one of his first patents there.

On December 1, 1970 , as part of the regional reform in Hesse, the communities of Helsa and Wickenrode voluntarily merged to form the community of Helsa-Wickenrode . With the merger, Wickenrode moved from the district of Witzenhausen to the district of Kassel . As early as August 1, 1972, the municipality of Helsa-Wickenrode was incorporated into the newly founded municipality of Helsa by virtue of state law together with Eschenstruth and St. Ottilien .

legend

From the most simply as fairy-tale character of the Brothers Grimm known Frau Holle is related to Wickenrode reports the following:

On St. Nicholas Day she comes out of her mountain ( Hoher Meißner ) to help people in need. Like the Wickenröder Essias Gunkel, to whom she is said to have shown the brown coal of the Hirschberg .

Another legend reports that she came to Hirschberg on May 1st and looked into the Fulda valley. On one such day, according to legend, she freed the daughter of a glassmaker from the spell of an evil witch.

A punishing woman Holle is described in the saga of the honey farm. Since everything was doing so well on a farm on the Sandberg, the Wickenröders called it "Honighof". The farmer of the farm as well as his sons were haughty and stingy and their death in a fire that completely destroyed the farm (triggered by a lightning strike) is attributed to Mrs. Holle. Only the good-natured and compassionate daughter of the farmer was spared and henceforth blessed with happiness. The place where the farm is said to have stood has kept its name among the locals.
