Mengsberg Church

history

The " Knickwandtopf von Mengsberg" in the Hessisches Landesmuseum in Kassel , a vessel from the time of the Merovingians, suggests that the area around Mengsberg was already settled in the 6th or 7th century. The village was first mentioned in a document from the Haina monastery in 1294 . The oldest contemporary witnesses are the large linden trees above the pond (old fairground).

In 1360/67 a church in Mengsberg is mentioned for the first time in the Ziegenhainer Urbar.

A parish church in Mengsberg has been documented since 1475, but it burned down in the great fire on September 15, 1875.

In 1879 the foundation stone for today's church was laid and in 1883 it was consecrated.

On January 1, 1974, the formerly independent municipality Mengsberg became a district of Neustadt (Hesse) by means of state law in the course of the regional reform in Hesse . Until then it belonged to the district of Ziegenhain .
