Sandweier is a district of Baden-Baden that was incorporated in 1975 . It was first mentioned in a document as Wilr in 1308 .

Naming

According to historians, Wilr should be derived from Villare , which means an extension settlement, a hamlet . The spelling of the name changed over the centuries from Santwiler (hamlet in the sand) to the current spelling.

history

To the east of Sandweier was the Landsee , which was drained in the early modern period.

Sandweier was subordinate to Iffezheim before the 16th century and formed a political and economic unit with Iffezheim until 1571. From 1571 there was a separate jurisdiction, which was made up of the mayor and respected citizens. They watched over the observance of the village order and exercised the lower jurisdiction in the place. Offenses related to forest and field violence, brawling and the like went outside, came before the court of the bailiwick . Politically and economically, Sandweier and Iffezheim were still connected after 1571, as the separation hardly prevailed and the Sandweiers church, which had become independent in 1509, came back to Iffezheim from 1634, before it had belonged to the Strasbourg diocese. In addition to common forests and pastures, the two communities also owned joint production facilities such as mills and a brick factory .

Several residents emigrated to Hungary around 1700 . In 1753 Sandweier had 368 inhabitants. In 1791 there was a sawmill between Sandweier and Iffezheim, built by Wilhelm Brenneisen in the Dutch style, as a windmill . At the beginning of the 18th century, the Sandweiers church began to strive for independence again, probably also driven by dissatisfaction with the Iffezheim pastors. In 1769, Prince-Bishop Rohan of Strasbourg ordered the final separation of the churches of Iffezheim and Sandweier.

In 1901 a new school building was built, which still serves its purpose in the 21st century. Now there is a primary school in it. In 1971 a new secondary school was built (now secondary and technical secondary school). On January 1, 1975, Sandweier was incorporated into Baden-Baden. In 1982 the Rheintalhalle Sandweier was inaugurated.

In the 21st century, Sandweier is a place with numerous medium-sized handicraft businesses and two gravel works. Due to its good infrastructure, Sandweier is in great demand as a residential area. This is how large new development areas came into being in the 2010s.

Others

SS leaders Heinrich Schwarz (1947) and Fritz Suhren (1950) were executed near Sandweier .
