Steinbach is a district of the independent city of Baden-Baden and has 4054 inhabitants. It was first mentioned in a document in the Codex Hirsaugensis in 1070 . On August 23, 1258, King Richard of Cornwall, at the request of Margrave Rudolf I of Baden, granted Steinbach town rights based on the model of Freiburg . From around the year 1300, a city wall was built that enclosed a square with an area of around one and a half hectares. It had two gates: the Bühler Tor to the south with a prison on the second floor and the northern Badener Tor. Steinbach was the administrative seat of the Baden office of Steinbach .

Steinbach with its district Umweg and the other so-called Rebland communities Varnhalt and Neuweier have belonged to Baden-Baden since 1972. While Varnhalt and Neuweier and the district of Umweg are still in the mountain zone, Steinbach is located west of Neuweier in the Rhine plain .

All three wine villages are located on the so-called Ortenau Wine Trail (marking: red diamond with blue grapes on a white background), which extends from Baden-Baden to Offenburg .

The area under vines cultivated by the three municipalities is one of the largest closed wine-growing areas in Germany with its 325 hectares. The place Steinbach with detour, as well as Varnhalt and Neuweier are the only places in Germany outside Franconia that have the right to fill their wine in so-called Bocksbeuteln . In the 18th century, the places were granted this right by the Würzburg bishop .
