Ruchheim is a district and at the same time one of the ten districts of the independent city of Ludwigshafen am Rhein in Rhineland-Palatinate .

geography

location

Ruchheim from the south

Ruchheim is about nine kilometers west of the city center and can be reached via the motorway. The place is located in a low terrace of the Rhine plain and has only slight differences in altitude. The altitude varies only between 94 and 95 meters above sea level. As a result, the groundwater level is also very high. As a result, most houses used to be built without a basement. Even the cemetery could hardly be used without filling it up and was therefore filled up by about one meter. On the other hand, this location offers favorable conditions for irrigating the fields and thus for growing vegetables.

The 929 hectare district borders the communities of Maxdorf and Eppstein in the north, Fußgönheim in the west and Mutterstadt in the south (all of which are Rhein-Pfalz-Kreis ). In the east lies the Ludwigshafen district of Oggersheim .

climate

Ruchheim lies in the Upper Rhine Plain, which is protected from cold easterly winds by the Odenwald and from stormy westerly winds by the Palatinate Forest . Therefore, mainly winds from the north and south blow here. The winds from the southwest are most common. This makes the area one of the least rainy regions in Germany. The mean annual temperature is around 10 ° C.

Due to its location west of Ludwigshafen, Ruchheim is largely spared from the industrial emissions from the city of Ludwigshafen. An old saying goes:

Two hours from the mountains and two hours from the Rhine is good. "

history

Ruchheim was first mentioned in a document in the Lorsch Codex in 771 when it was donated.

In 1700 Ruchheim was sold to the von Russicon family from Basel . This converted the moated castle into a baroque castle complex, of which the house and parts of the surrounding wall are still preserved.

On March 16, 1974, Ruchheim was incorporated into Ludwigshafen. At that time the place had 2409 inhabitants. In the meantime it has grown to approx. 6200 inhabitants.

The history of Ruchheim is also summarized on a plaque on the community center.

Surname

The oldest known name of Ruchheim can be found in the Lorsch Codex in the form of Richinisheim , which should mean something like home of Richin . The name Richinesheim appears in a document from the Weißenburg monastery in 895. In a document from the same monastery from the 10th century it is called Ruochheim (Home of Ruoch). In 1271 the place name is given as Rucheim. From 1600 the current spelling Ruchheim appears for the first time. However, the name Rugheim is still spelled in 1836.

About the spelling of the name there is a gladly told anecdote from 1972, in which the SPD local association celebrated its 70th founding party in the Zum Schwanen hall . On the stage it was written in big red styrofoam letters:

" 70 years of the SPD Ruchheim "

Then the landlord Kurt Gerhardt came into the hall and scolded:

" What did you do then? Since when has Ruchem been writing with zwä 'h'? "

The question confused the whole congregation and all comrades began to spell. No one was sure how the place name would be spelled correctly. So they picked up the phone book and were relieved to find that they had spelled Ruchheim correctly after all.
