Edigheim is a district in the Oppau district of the independent city of Ludwigshafen am Rhein in Rhineland-Palatinate .
history
Edigheim was first mentioned in a document in the Lorsch Codex in 772, but it probably originated as early as the 6th century, making it a very early establishment. Historically relevant is the Old High German name "Otincheim", which has an astonishing reference to the fountain of the same name from the manuscript of the Nibelungenlied , where Siegfried von Hagen was murdered.
Together with Oppau, the place was probably on the right side of the Rhine until 886 . Then the river changed its course again and since then Oppau and Edigheim have been on the left bank.
Up until the 19th century, Edigheim was repeatedly threatened by the Rhine floods . In 1774, 1784 and 1824 the floods destroyed the crops and many residents drowned. Even after the Rhine regulation, which was carried out according to plans by Colonel Johann Gottfried Tulla from 1826, the danger persisted. The worst flooding occurred around the turn of the year 1882 and 1883. Due to the melting of the snow, the Rhine rose by 6.60 meters and the dam broke. Oppau and Edigheim were flooded. Some people and animals had to flee onto the roofs.
On 23 October 2014, came into Edigheim when working on a 67- bar - pressure gas line to an explosion that caused a 200-meter-high flame in a residential area. One person was killed immediately and 26 people were injured. A construction worker died on November 12th from his injuries. Houses and cars were damaged within a radius of around 300 meters, and some residential buildings became uninhabitable. In addition to the gas pipeline, there was also a crude oil pipeline and a fiber optic pipeline . Since the laid fiber optic cables were also damaged in the explosion, the telephone connections failed in the northern districts of Ludwigshafen am Rhein, in Frankenthal and in Worms .
General view - high water mark 1883
On April 1, 1928, after increasing economic difficulties and failed accession negotiations with Frankenthal, Edigheim was incorporated into Oppau , with which it was incorporated into Ludwigshafen in 1938.
