history

The Jewish community in Ruchheim belonged to the Jewish community in Fußgönheim until the middle of the 19th century . Ruchheim had its own synagogue and prayer room as early as the 18th century .

In 1862 the synagogue was set up in Fußgönheimer Strasse 52, but it had to be demolished because it was in disrepair . A new synagogue, which was inaugurated in 1881, was built on the same site. There was a school room on the ground floor, the prayer room in the back and the teacher's apartment on the top floor.

There was room for 60 men in the prayer room and another 35 seats in the women's gallery. The ceiling was blue and painted with gold stars.

Above the entrance portal read : This is the gate to the Lord, through it righteous go ( Psalm 118 : 20).

time of the nationalsocialism

During the November pogrom in 1938 , SA men ravaged the interior. The building remained undamaged and was used as a prisoner of war camp and storage room during World War II .

Todays use

After 1945 the building came into the possession of the Jewish community of the Rheinpfalz, which sold it to the Protestant parish in 1953. The parish converted it into a Protestant parish hall.
