The Benteler lowlands naturally belong to the East Munsterland Sands within the Ems sand plain .

history

The former coat of arms

The first references to the town of Benteler can be found in the history of the foundation of the Benedictine Abbey Liesborn in 1130. In 1081 the name Binitlahri appears for the first time in a document .

From 1816 Benteler belonged to the Liesborn-Wadersloh office .

In 1898, Benteler got its own Catholic church, the parish church of St. Antonius , which today forms the center of the village in the single courtyard settlement area of this Münsterland territory. The first child baptized in this church was Elisabeth Loddenkemper, born on January 31, 1898, a farmer's daughter from the extreme south of the village.

From April 1, 1898, Benteler was separated from Wadersloh and became an independent municipality.

Benteler has been one of the two districts of the municipality of Langenberg since January 1, 1970. The incorporation into Langenberg was interesting with regard to the Catholic dioceses . Langenberg is in the Archdiocese of Paderborn , while Benteler belongs to the Diocese of Münster .

Today there is also a Protestant (Lutheran) Church (Friedenskirche), which in 1969 was largely financed by donations. In 1994, on the 25th anniversary, a bell tower was built. It was also largely financed by donations. The Evangelical Church of Westphalia decided in 2005 to close this church on January 1st, 2007. The former church is now used as a residential building.

Economy, leisure and culture

Benteler has a primary school ("Schmeddingschule"). There is also a savings bank, a branch of the Volksbank Bielefeld-Gütersloh , a supermarket, a bakery, a laundry and various restaurants, craftsmen and florists. Benteler is still a typical country village, but agriculture as the original main branch of the economy is now almost meaningless.

The cultural center of the place is the "Antonius Bell", the parish hall of the Catholic Church. The offer is supplemented by several cultural and sports clubs. In terms of sport, Benteler had something to offer especially in the 1990s in the field of " Trecker Treck ". Of particular importance is the annual rifle festival, which is one of the first rifle festivals held in the surrounding area during the course of the year.

anecdote

Benteler's roots are closely linked to today's municipality of Wadersloh ( Warendorf district ), to which Benteler once belonged - before the Benteler revolution . In 1898 or a little earlier, a vote took place in which all parishioners (there were only men) should vote on whether Benteler should become its own parish or not. Since the Benteleraner were numerically fewer residents than the Wadersloher, they had to use a ruse to enforce their request.

The polling stations were open from morning to evening at a certain time. The Wadersloher rushed to the ballot box, but they did not take the Bentelerans' aspirations for independence too seriously. They thought that the Bentelerans had probably changed their mind about independence after only a few Bentelerans had gone to Wadersloh to vote until late in the afternoon. So the Wadersloher did not see the necessity to go to this election for their part.

Just under an hour or less before the election, however, the Benteleraner set off in the direction of Wadersloh, 7 km away. The horses were harnessed, and carts were taken to the polling station, where they arrived in time for the closure. Every Benteleran eligible to vote gave his vote for the independence of Wadersloh. The people of Wadersloh were completely taken by surprise, and when the votes were counted, more people voted for Benteler's independence than to remain in the municipality of Wadersloh - and this only because most of the Wadersloh people stayed away from the election because they did not have such a solidarity with the Bentelerans had believed.
