Hohenkirchen is a district of the municipality Espenau in the north Hessian district of Kassel in Hesse and the seat of the municipal administration.

Geographical location

Hohenkirchen is located a little north of Vellmar between the Habichtswald in the southwest and the Reinhardswald in the northeast. The upper reaches of the aspen flows southwest past the village . On the northern edge of Hohenkirchen there is a pond with the origin of the Esse , which passes the village north in an east-west direction.

The state road  3386 (Vellmar – Hohenkirchen– Immenhausen ) leads through Hohenkirchen , from which the district road  34 (Hohenkirchen – Mönchehof –Schäferberg) leads to the B 83. To the west of the village run the Kassel – Warburg railway (with a stop in the neighboring Espenau district of Mönchehof) and the federal road 83 .

history

Hohenkirchen was first mentioned in a document in 1285. Settlement has certainly taken place earlier, because around 1150 a first chapel was built on the site where the Protestant church now stands . A tympanum on the current church bears witness to this .

On December 1, 1970, the community Espenau was re-formed through the voluntary amalgamation of the previously independent communities Hohenkirchen and Mönchehof.

Buildings

  • The Protestant church of Hohenkirchen was built on the site of a chapel from the mid-12th century on the Kirchberg. Exactly how old the church in Hohenkirchen is is not known. Some evidence suggests that the church existed as early as 1150. Since then it has been structurally changed several times. In 1691 the north and south sides of the church were added. In 1825 the cemetery was closed to the church. An extension on the north side was built in 1967 on a previously disused cemetery. The east window of the church has been adorned with artistic glazing since 1887/88 with the depiction of "Christ in front of the door" by the glass painter's workshop KJ Schultz, which was then based in Marburg.

Skeleton find

In June 2014, numerous bones were discovered during construction work in the Evangelical Church. The skeletons of 40 to 45 people were found in an extension of the church. They rested in graves, over which an extension was built in the 1960s. Only eight skeletons lay facing east as if in a grave, all other skulls and body bones heaped in one place. Employees of a specialist company had pried open the concrete floor in the basement and found the bones.
