history

Schlossberg in Stein with Dalbergschem country house and parish church
Presteneck moated castle

The place name of Stein comes from an approximately 20 meter high tuff stone on the Schlossberg ( Hallenberg ), on which the Burg zum Stein (later: Upper Castle ) of the Lords of Weinsberg was already in the high Middle Ages . To the south and west below the Schlossberg is the place as Burgweiler. The moated castle Presteneck forms the southern end of the old town , which was originally also a Weinsberg fief and probably already existed as a castle in the Middle Ages. With the castle chapel of Margarethe von Weinsberg in the castle zum Stein , a local church is first mentioned in 1090.

The village of Stein and the castles Presteneck and zum Stein were sold to Kurmainz by the Lords of Weinsberg in 1335 . Schloss zum Stein and a small part of the village of Stein came back to the Weinsberg as a fief. Presteneck and the rest of the town went to the Berlichingen as a fief . These were followed by the Echter von Mespelbrunn and these by the Horneck von Hornberg as fief takers. In 1549 Eberhard von Gemmingen bought Presteneck and the suburb. In 1580, he and his son Hans Walther built today's moated Presteneck Castle in place of Presteneck Castle. The Upper Castle and the other part of the village came in 1670 as pledge to the Lords of Dalberg , who built a country house there in their place, and later to the Counts of Degenfeld via the Wiser and Westerholt .

In the course of mediatization , Stein first came to the Counts of Leiningen-Heidesheim in 1803 , then to the Grand Duchy of Baden in 1806 and, in contrast to the other parts of today's city of Neuenstadt, was thus part of the district office and later district of Mosbach until its incorporation .

After the line from Gemmingen to Presteneck died out in 1831, the moated castle gradually fell into disrepair and was later sold by the heirs to the municipality of Stein. In 1871 the community also acquired a house built by Abraham Gumbel in 1852 and used it as the new town hall in the future. Opposite the town hall, a war memorial was erected in honor of those involved in the war in 1870/71. In the late 19th century, the dilapidated Weinsberg Castle was completely demolished and the neo-Gothic parish church was built in its place in 1884 as a continuation of the castle chapel.

In 1939 there were 1040 inhabitants, at the end of 1945 there were 1074 and 1961 around 1230. In 1970, the state of Baden-Württemberg acquired Presteneck Castle and extensively renovated it from 1976 to 1981. On December 31, 1972, the town was incorporated into Neuenstadt am Kocher . On May 31, 2008 Stein am Kocher had 2,492 inhabitants.

Jewish community

After the Thirty Years' War, Jews were settled in Stein by both local rulers, who built a synagogue here. Around 1840 the Jewish community in Stein am Kocher had its highest level with around 130 people, but the size of the community quickly declined due to emigration and rural exodus . In 1875 there were only around 50, in 1900 15 and in 1933 ten people, most of whom managed to emigrate. There were no riots against Jews in Stein during the National Socialist era , but at least three Stein Jews died in the course of the deportation . The synagogue was sold in 1935 and destroyed by fighting in April 1945. The Gumbel family is one of the well-known Jews from Stein , and among other things has produced several bankers.

  • Presteneck Castle is a Renaissance three-wing moated castle with a splendid Gemmingen coat of arms above the main gate, historic gatehouse and farm building from 1579. The castle was renovated from 1976 to 1981 and is now used for residential and office purposes.
  • The parish church Heilig Kreuz was built from 1881 to 1884 in neo-Gothic style according to plans by Ludwig Maier on the Schlossberg in place of the earlier castle. The church was extensively renovated from 1987 to 1994.
  • In addition to the church, the Dalbergsche Landhaus is also located on the Schlossberg , a representative residential building of the former local rule, which as the Upper Castle was once inhabited by the Counts of Wiser and the Counts of Westerholt .
