Location of the Aalen district in Baden-Württemberg | ||
The district of Aalen was a district in Baden-Württemberg , which was dissolved on January 1, 1973 as part of the district reform .
geography
location
The district of Aalen, the largest district in Baden-Württemberg before the district reform in terms of its area , was located in the east of Baden-Württemberg on the border with Bavaria .
Geographically, it had a share in the eastern Swabian Alb and its northern foothills. The district area crossed the Jagst and the Kocher , two tributaries of the Neckar.
Neighboring areas
Its neighboring districts were clockwise beginning in 1972 in the northeast of Dinkelsbühl and Nördlingen (in Bavaria) as well as Heidenheim , Schwäbisch Gmünd , Backnang , Schwäbisch Hall and the district of Crailsheim .
history
Before 1800, the area of the Aalen district belonged to various domains, including the Duchy of Württemberg , the Margraviate of Ansbach , the Principality of Oettingen , the Prince Provosts of Ellwangen and the imperial cities of Aalen and Bopfingen . In 1803 the area came to Württemberg , where it initially belonged to the upper offices of Aalen and Ellwangen as well as some staff offices within the Ellwangen bailiff. In 1810 the Aalen , Ellwangen and Neresheim offices were formed, which belonged to the Jagstkreis and existed until 1938. Then they were combined to form the Aalen district.
After the formation of the state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952, the district of Aalen belonged to the administrative district of North Württemberg . As a result of the municipal reform in 1970, the district area changed in one case. On September 1, 1971, the municipality of Untergröningen , previously the district of Schwäbisch Gmünd , was incorporated into the municipality of Abtsgmünd and thus assigned to the district of Aalen.
With effect from January 1, 1973, the district of Aalen was dissolved and its communities assigned to the newly formed Ostalb district , which thus also became the legal successor of the district of Aalen.

coat of arms
The coat of arms of the district of Aalen showed a half-black eagle at the front in a shield split by gold and red, and at the back a golden miter with hanging ribbons. The coat of arms was awarded to the Aalen district on May 27, 1957 by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of the Interior .
The eagle stands for the former imperial cities of Aalen and Bopfingen as well as the proportions of other imperial cities in the district. The miter symbolizes the former prince provostry Ellwangen and the monasteries Ellwangen and Neresheim .
Economy and Infrastructure
traffic
There was no federal motorway running through the district (the A 7 did not exist at the time). Therefore, it was only opened up by federal highways 19 and 29 and several state and district roads.
Communities
From 1938 onwards, 65 municipalities, including 6 towns, belonged to the Aalen district.
On March 7, 1968, the state parliament of Baden-Württemberg set the course for a community reform . With the law to strengthen the administrative power of smaller municipalities , it was possible for smaller municipalities to voluntarily unite to form larger municipalities. The beginning in the district of Aalen was made on January 1st 1970 by two communities: Waldhausen was incorporated into the city of Aalen and Flochberg into the city of Bopfingen. In the period that followed, the number of communities steadily decreased until the Aalen district finally merged into the Ostalb district in 1973.
The largest municipality in the district was the district town of Aalen , which has been a major district town since April 1, 1956 . The smallest community was Benzenzimmern.
In the table, the municipalities of the Aalen district are before the municipal reform. Today they all belong to the Ostalb district. The population figures refer to the census results in 1961 and 1970.
License Plate
On July 1, 1956, the district was assigned the distinctive sign AA when the vehicle registration number that is still valid today was introduced . It is still issued in the Ostalb district to this day.
