history
Earliest settlement
The oldest signs of settlement in the Elchingen area are the Hallstatt-era burial mounds in the northern Heiligenwald. One of the 20 hills was opened and urns and other vessels were found.
Roman times
The Roman road, which connected the Roman settlements in Heidenheim ( Aquileia ) and Bopfingen ( Opie ), ran through the area of today's Elchingen . A Roman guard hill was located near the present church.
In the historical atlas of Baden-Württemberg , a Roman cemetery and four villae rusticae are named for the Elchingen area , three of them in today's settlement area and one to the east of the village. In the description of the Oberamt Neresheim it is reported that remains of Roman buildings were found in Fuchsgasse and in Gewann Birk to the east.
From the Middle Ages
Elchingen was mentioned in 1144 as "Alchingen", half of which belonged to the tenth district of the Ohmenheim church. Later that were lords of Hürnheim the main owner, Conrad by the High home sold Elchingen to the counts of Oettingen , which in 1311 their property along with the church set the monastery Neresheim leaving around 1200 pounds Heller. In 1343 the widow of Vogt von Diepertsbuch was the owner. Elchingen came completely back to the Neresheim monastery in 1764, with which it came to Thurn and Taxis in 1803 and Württemberg in 1810.
Elchingen was connected to the rail network from 1901 to 1972 with the Härtsfeldbahn . On May 1, 1972, the community of Elchingen was incorporated into Neresheim.
