Location of Holzhammer in Schnaittenbach
|
Holzhammer is a district of the town of Schnaittenbach in the district of Amberg-Sulzbach in the Upper Palatinate in Bavaria .
origin of the name
Originally, the village of Holzhammer was called Holzmühle. In the Upper Palatinate dialect, wood also stands for the term forest. That is why the name Holzmühle can be interpreted as "mill in the forest". The village was only given the name Holzhammer when, in 1366, Count Palatine Rupprecht the Elder Frederick the Kastner zum Rosenberg granted the right to build an iron hammer at the mill mentioned, which was in his possession.
In 1366 Holzhammer is mentioned as a wood mill. Also in 1387 a hammer master Herrmann Holder von der Holzmühl is mentioned. In 1492 the village is mentioned as Holtzhamer, in 1792 as Holzhamer and finally in 1877 as a wooden hammer.
geography
The district Holzhammer - and thus also the town of Holzhammer in the district - are located in the northeastern municipality of the town of Schnaittenbach .
history
It is no longer possible to determine when and how the place Holzhammer came about. The Ehenbach originally divided Holzhammer into two halves, which also belonged to two different districts (Amberg and Neustadt an der Waldnaab). The southern half (Gut Holzhammer / Amberg district) should be assumed as the starting point for the later settlement (Holzhammer village / Neustadt district). There was originally a mill there. In 1366 Friedrich der Kastner zum Rosenberg received from Count Palatine Rupprecht the Elder the right to build an iron hammer at the mill mentioned, which was in his possession. Holzhammer was declared an estate around 1853. In the 17th century, the estate changed hands several times. From around this time the castle was baroque and the chapel was added.
After a major fire on July 21, 1823, Holzhammer was rebuilt as a row village . Before that, Holzhammer had the structure of a clustered village .
The Ehenbachtal was repeatedly hit by heavy floods, which also affected the houses in Holzhammer. After a severe flood in 1927, the Ehenbach was straightened between 1927 and 1929.
On July 1, 1972, the previously independent municipality of Holzhammer was incorporated into the municipality of Schnaittenbach .
In 2006 Holzhammer won a bronze medal in the district decision in the competition Our village has a future .
Population development
By 1800 Holzhammer consisted of 20 houses and had 106 inhabitants.
