history

Until the founding of today's church

The political community Weißenbrunn was created during the Bavarian municipal regional reform from 1971 to 1978. During this time, the formerly independent communities Eichenbühl, Gössersdorf, Hummendorf, Reuth, Thonberg and Wildenberg joined the larger municipality of Weißenbrunn. With the exception of Gössersdorf, the other parts of the community were shaped for centuries by the predominant manorial rule of the knight dynasty of the von Redwitz and the related Marschalk von Ebneth zu Wildenberg. In Gössersdorf, too, the von Redwitz and the aristocratic manor Weißenbrunn owned.

With the exception of Gössersdorf, which belongs to the Protestant parish of Kirchleus , and Hummendorf, which at that time belonged to the parish of Küps, the other places have been ecclesiastically assigned to the Weißenbrunn parish (reformed in 1557) since the pre-Reformation period. After the Second World War , the new Catholic citizens set up a prayer room in the hall of the Paradies inn in 1946. A Catholic church was built in Thonberg in 1948, which is now visited by the Catholics of the municipality. The church is a branch of the Catholic parish Küps .

On a terrace above the Rodach near Hummendorf, abundant Stone Age finds dating from between 50,000 and 20,000 BC Dated to be secured.

Around 1900 weapons and jewelry were found near Wildenberg, which are exhibited in the Prehistoric and Protohistoric State Collection in Munich . It is believed that they came from a burial mound from the earliest Bronze Age around 1500 BC. Come from BC. The later discovery of a lance tip was made in the early Hallstatt period, around 1200 BC. Dated. Also noteworthy is the so-called Thonberger helmet, a bronze cap helmet that is exhibited in the Germanic National Museum in Nuremberg . A replica is shown in a showcase in the Weißenbrunn town hall. The helmet was found in a sand pit in the Thonberg district of Sachspfeife in 1906 and is dated around 1200 BC. Dated. These are only likely to have been traces of an early inspection by hunters and gatherers or relics of passing warriors, but certainly not evidence of such an early settlement, since further finds and evidence are missing.

Incorporations

On April 1, 1971, the previously independent municipality of Reuth was incorporated. Eichenbühl joined the company on July 1, 1971. Thonberg followed on January 1, 1972, Hummendorf on July 1, 1972. Gössersdorf has belonged to Weißenbrunn since July 1, 1976. Finally, on January 1, 1978, Wildenberg was added.

Population development

In the period from 1988 to 2018, the population fell from 3,087 to 2,850 by 237 inhabitants or 7.7%.
