history

The first mention was 1325. Pressig received the market rights in 1956.

Incorporations

On January 1, 1974, the community was Grössau Pressig in the market incorporated . On January 1, 1976, Marienroth and Posseck followed. Eila joined on January 1, 1977. On May 1, 1978, the municipalities of Förtschendorf, Friedersdorf and Welitsch and the market in Rothenkirchen were incorporated (with the town of Brauersdorf incorporated on January 1, 1971).

Population development

Population development of the Pressig market since 1840

In the years after the Second World War , the population of the Pressig market grew rapidly (see graphic). While only about 4100 inhabitants were counted in 1939, there were over 5500 in 1950. Since the 1970s, the population has been falling again.

In the period from 1988 to 2018, the population fell from 4,447 to 3,932 by 515 or 11.6%.

Brauersdorf

The still rural brewing village was first mentioned in a document in 1307. The place is an anger village with the village square in the center and the property radiating around it.

Posseck

Posseck was first mentioned in a document in 1180.

Rothenkirchen

Rothenkirchen was first mentioned in a document around 1200. Market rights were granted to the place as early as 1377 . In the 14./15. Century exercised the place the low and high jurisdiction . In the late Middle Ages it came to the Lords of Würtzburg and after the Reformation became a Protestant parish village, which also pastorated the Protestants in the Catholic towns in the area. The place was therefore a thorn in the side of the bishops of Bamberg and their counter-Reformation policy: in 1625, Prince-Bishop Johann Georg II. Fuchs of Dornheim appointed a priest at armed force.

Welitsch

Welitsch was first mentioned in a document in 1325 in the first Bamberg land register with seven estates and a mill. It was probably created after the diocese was founded in 1007. During this time the Franks penetrated further into the Franconian Forest from Kronach. Welitsch had various rulers in the early years of its existence. Among other things, it was pledged to the Langheim monastery and belonged to the Lords of Würtzburg . It is not known when Welitsch returned to the diocese of Bamberg.

According to Hans Silbermann, the Welitscher had lumber justice, but no brewing justice. In 1558 they protested unsuccessfully against having to get their beer from Kronach. These regulations were in effect until 1801.

coat of arms

Pressig coat of arms
Blazon : “Under a blue shield head, inside three silver heraldic lilies next to each other, in silver a growing peasant with a blue coat, red vest, black trousers and black hat, who is holding two diagonally crossed golden ears of wheat in his right hand, next to it a six-pointed red star on the left . "

The market Pressig was granted permission to use this coat of arms by letter from the government of Upper Franconia on May 3, 1979.

Foundation of the coat of arms: The coat of arms was formed from the coats of arms of the former independent municipalities, which were merged to form the new large municipality of Pressig during the municipal reform until 1978 . The farmer with the diagonally crossed ears of corn comes from the historic coat of arms of Rothenkirchen, the red star that of Pressig. The latter refers to the lords of Würtzburg and their family coat of arms - they used to be the most important landowners in the municipality. The ears of corn also stand for Brauersdorf, Eila, Friedersdorf, Grössau and Posseck as well as the agricultural character of the community. The three silver heraldic lilies in the head of the shield are taken from the coats of arms of the former communities of Förtschendorf, Marienroth and Welitsch and refer to the church patronage of St. Mary in Förtschendorf, the place name Marienroth and the church patronage of St. Anna in Welitsch.

Town twinning

AustriaAustria Austria : The market town has a partnership with Wallern an der Trattnach in Upper Austria . The founders were the chairmen of the soldiers' comradeships of Rothenkirchen and Wallern, Franz Hofmann and Alois Petermeier, the mayors of Pressig and Wallern, Josef Wich and Ernst Ottensamer.
