Hinrich Rahmann (born November 28, 1935 in Bentheim ) is a German zoologist and neurobiologist .

Life

Hinrich Rahmann studied natural sciences from 1956 at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster , where he completed his studies with a dissertation in 1960. After a stay in 1966 as an associate professor in the USA, he completed his habilitation in zoology in Münster . There he became a lecturer in 1969 and H3 professor in 1973 and head of the Department of Neurobiology at the Zoological Institute. In the same year he was appointed to the chair of zoology at the University of Hohenheim in Stuttgart. In 1980 he turned down a call to the chair for zoophysiology in Hamburg. From 1975 until his retirement in 2001 he was managing director of the Zoological Institute in Hohenheim. In 1977 and 1992 he held research professorships in Japan.

Services

Rahmann's research activities are in the fields of neurobiology, especially neurochemistry , experimental behavior and memory research, limnology (ecology of surface waters) and nature, animal and species protection. In addition to his works in book form, he wrote over 300 specialist articles in scientific journals. In particular, he investigated the importance of gangliosides (glycolipids) in the transmission of excitation in the nervous system and that of gravity for the development and orientation of animals in space .

Rahmann worked with his wife Mathilde Rahmann (born March 27, 1939 in Hohenlimburg ), a doctor of zoology, on many occasions, for example the establishment and operation of a marine biological teaching and research station at the University of Münster near Carolinensiel in East Friesland . In September 1982 they prepared an expert opinion to evaluate the effects of planned dyke construction measures on fauna and flora in Iheringsgroden between Neuharlingersiel and Harlesiel for the Esens-Harlingerland dyke, the recommendations of which were largely followed by the decision-makers when building a new dike.

The two researchers worked closely together in other research areas as well, as demonstrated by joint publications.

After Rahmann's retirement, further joint research activities were carried out both in the natural sciences and in the humanities, for example a proposal in 2005 to decipher the so-called Nebra sky disk or to interpret prehistoric road networks.

Interdisciplinarity
