The Sandstone Museum Bad Bentheim was opened in summer 1999 and is located in a half-timbered house in the castle park below Bentheim Castle in Bad Bentheim , Lower Saxony .

Bentheimer sandstone and Gildehauser sandstone were a coveted stone in the Grafschaft Bentheim, in Westphalia and in the Netherlands, but also in Belgium and Denmark. It was extracted for centuries in Bentheim and the surrounding area in the quarries , in the so-called Kuhlen.

To the side of Bentheim Castle is a sculpture, the "Kuhlkerl". This memorial is intended to commemorate the workers who quarried the Bentheim sandstone in these hollows. They often died of "kuhlpiep", silicosis , the dust lung disease caused by inhaled stone dust. The cool guy, a casual man pulling his bibs, greets every visitor in a friendly manner. The figure was erected in 1996 on the site of the former "Herrnberg" quarry. It comes from the Dutch artist Bernd Seiger.

Exhibitions

There is a permanent exhibition on 180 km 2 , which can be divided into two parts:

  • Geology of the Bentheim sandstone
  • History of mining and use (art, architecture, economic development of the region and people's lives)

In addition, several large exhibits are shown in the outdoor area. The permanent exhibition is supplemented by annual special exhibitions.
